As far as my town .. it has improved as far as the downtown area. It was pretty rundown when I was a kid. It really had a pretty impressive facelift.

As far as the neighborhood and things being more laidback and easygoing..I have to agree with that but then maybe it just seems that way. Information is more readily found and reported so the bad things show up now where they might not have years ago.

My gun, when I played Chip Saunders, was a stick and the battleground was the alley, deep into the night. No paranoia about being abducted. I never see kids out playing in my neighborhood now. Pine cones were hand grenades. Now the toy guns are cheap plastic from China and probably never make it outside before being broken.

I may have strayed from your original thread topic but to summarize -my town looks better but the people are less likely to be outside talking over the fence, kids don't play outside (computers)etc...

On dec 26th, i was back in my hometown for several hours. last time i was there was on Christmas 1998-and the place looked EXACTLY the same as when i left it in may 1996. Well, boy-o-boy did i get a surprise. On the highway (HWY 77-to be exact) they built a series of overpasses, the Police and Shefiffs depts combined and are now in the same and new building on east king Street, Wal-mart built a super stopre on what used to be known as military highway-because it led you strait to the NAS Kingsvilles front entrance, they also now have several new hotels, a Chilis restaurant, two Whataburgers, a new truck stop, FOUR Subway sandwich shopw, a Lows and some other businesses.

I'm still living in the same place (about a mile outside of town), where I was born and raised. In the 50+ years you would have to look hard to see any major changes. In 1940 there were 750 people, in 1970; 900, in 2000; 1015. The thing I remember most is going through school from 1st grade through 12th with the same kids. Better than half in my class still live within an hours drive. Laid back country living, roaming the woods, playing in the creeks, never locking the doors, not being able to get away with anything since everyone knew everybody else. At sixteen driving the back roads just cruising in my Studebaker Lark and enjoying the warm beer we were able to get an older friend to buy for us. First crushes and first love (wonder where she is now?). Good Times my friend, Good Times.
