I’ve resisted buying COD MW2 for several months. There was one fact alone which said to me; “do not buy this game”. That fact was the lack of dedicated server support.

Through some prodding and the fact that COD MW2 seems to be the only MP thing going within the WW2 forum I finally relented in buying this game.

I started out by trying out the obstacle course within the Spec Op’s Campaign. (I do like the fact that in order to get some practice you don’t have to go through the single player campaign and have to go through a scripted single player storyline.)

Next I tried out the Sniper Fi mission which helped a bit in getting the aiming down. One thing I think is different between COD WAW and COD MW2 is the way the aim down sight works. If I’m not mistaken COD WAW is click on for aim down sight, click off for standard aim; compared to click and hold for the same with COD MW2, as soon as you remove your finger from ADS you are removed from ADS. There are other differences which I can’t quite put my finger on yet.

Shortly after this I got a greeting from the gang to join in for some Multiplayer action. We played a fun couple of games which must have been 4 person Co-op to help me get my bearings. I knew I wasn’t doing that great.

Things really slid downhill getting into some actual Multiplayer games. To begin with the whole match-up system for multi-player is stupid. The match making was pretty much a roll of the dice. You sit and wait 5 minutes for a match-up to develop. You wait as the clock clicks down 5-4-3-2 and then the host scatters and the whole process starts over again. One time everyone who had the 1PzP designation was dropped leaving me alone in the party (most likely someone didn’t want clan members in his match-up; and I neglected to change my prefix to read 1PzP). You have no idea who you will be matched up with; most likely never playing against them again. Dedicated servers are so great because you can get in matches with people who like to play the game the way you like, on maps that you like. It’s much easier to make friends with those who play on the server you play on.

The amount of players is greatly reduced. It’s more of a 5 vs 5 or 6 vs 6 match-up. I’m neutral here because it is much easier to get a kill with modern weapons, and the map sizes are fairly small to match the person per map size. I still would have to say though that I’ve been on 64 player maps (Battlefield 2) where the scope of the game was epic. I haven’t played Search and Destroy yet, but the map sizes in MW2 are most likely just about right for that.

I can’t say I really enjoyed the game-play that much. Anyone who looked at my miserable K to D ratio I don’t think could blame me. The things that turned me off was incredible amount of getting knifed. It seemed that there was an invisible force field which made people running from directly in front of me able to not get hit by my rounds and stab me. The times that I yelled the loudest is when I knew I should have landed several hits but get knifed instead. It must be that they had the super stretch bonus. There was one individual that was just running at super speed with the care package all around the map knifing everyone. This is insanely unrealistic. The rest of the guys did not like getting killed by the noob tubes every other time, but to me this would at least be more realistic than the knifing abomination. With noob tubes at least there is a limited supply.

I didn’t like all the cartoony pop up messages.

The graphics themselves I did like.

To be honest I am not built for multiplayer FPS type games except for one respect and that is desire. I never had great reflexes, I can’t think quick on my feet, my age is depleting my reflexes and eyesight. I have to make adjustments to gain respectability in many ways. In COD WAW my K to D ratio is gaining on 1 to 1. Of course a big portion of this is just knowing the maps.

I am tempted to drop this game before I even get started. There would be a big learning curve before I could really help my team mates out, and there are aspects of the game I just don’t like. I will let things take the direction they take. If the clan in development really needs numbers I would be more than willing to be a student of the game and hopefully get to a good level. If not I don’t want to be a drag on how good the potential team will be; there are a lot of other games out there I can get involved in.

One thing that I will say is that I will “never” buy a game again that is not build for dedicated servers. I was curious what the difference was and I found out what I need to know.

I think you will be pleased to hear they fixed the care package glitch, but the game is still far from perfect.

THE most annoying thing is still the lack of dedicated servers. I feel I spend more time looking for a game than playing.

That is good to hear that some progress has been made. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the times I got knifed were due to that glitch.

It is amazing how much the lack of dedicated servers kills this game.

To be honest, the reasons I didnt buy MW2 are because 1) my comp can't run it and 2) I feel the subject was covered well enough with COD4. COD4 was so revolutionary that it's pretty tough to top it off, in my honest opinion. I just wasn't as attracted to buying MW2 as I was COD4.

If the game felt more realistic I would have stayed with it. All the randomness through lack of servers didn't help much either.

This game also helped me to see that I should probably steer away from FPS unless I find a game that really is in a niche that I can enjoy. My eyesight definitely isn't what it used to be and if I don't invest time I will not get to even an average level.

Heroes of Stalingrad is on the horizon; that most likely will be my next FPS game.

I personally like MW2, though that's probably because I don't play it online. I feel they could have at least made the SP campaign longer (its 5 hours long). Sadly I didn't get it on the PC because my PC can't play it anyways. Though just an fyi for the people that do own in on PC, a group hacked the game and added in dedicated servers as well as leaning.
