    Hello Tomcat,
Nah..I am not yet convinced by that.
The description or term F*** might have been around for a long time. Same goes for the German/Dutch word of Ficken. The latter meaning like; pushing something in, or hitting someone.
AFAIK you will not find the outspoken word of Ficken in the German Language in its nowadays meaning before 1955, and I would assume the same goes for F***.
I have so far never come across literature or a movie where the word F*** was used outspoken/written in it’s nowadays meaning/usage before the 60’s.
My guess is that this word came around with the Rock’n rollers or Hippies. – Maybe

Nope, that particular crudity has been around in the english language literally forever. SNAFU and FUBAR both used the notorious "F" word in the acronys, but were "cleaned up" for general consumption outside of the military.

The "F" word is mentioned in old diaries from the wild west, so it was a common expression in America long before you think, and the fact that it isn't in many movies until after the sixties was because of the "Hayes review board" which censored American movies until the late sixties.

I dislike using "wiki", but it does have a pretty good run-down on the etymology.

I don't care to post the link, since it includes the word itself. And it also includes the "urban legends" which Tomcat quotes one of.

Trusting to the site's naughty word filter (aha, it works):
    Online Etymology Dictionary

The most significant thing here is perhaps the unlikeliness of the written word to turn up in the sort of books that were published and more likely to survive.
I've a friend that teaches at postgrad level in Playwrights of the 15th/16th Century and if I recall right the word's far from uncommon in their work.

(Nice to see the word 'fokken' in there, as that's what a German friend says the British squaddies were known as around Hamel when she lived there 'The Fokken': "Fokken this & Fokken that" ;).)

I guess this is what brought the F word around in this world

In 1965, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson said to the Greek ambassador Alexandros Matsas when he objected to American plans in Cyprus, "F*** your parliament and your constitution. America is an elephant. Cyprus is a flea. Greece is a flea. If these two fellows continue itching the elephant they may just get whacked by the elephant's trunk, whacked good." :D

Another good one is this questionary in England, were the British defined the word F as the 2nd worst and MotherF as the 3rd worst..Hmmm, I would like to know then which word is Englands worst? -v.Poop any idea? :D

Aha, the fine & ever useful 'C word'. Maybe the rudest to many, but far from the worst as far as I'm concerned.
Another ancient one for sure, one street in York (or so we were told as children) used to bear the name Gropec*** Lane. Which I believe reflected the particular specialisms of the businesses down there. ;)

    Dumpkoff....You left off dumpkoff....

And donner and blitzen..or where they reindeers...

I saw a few commando and battle type stories where Germans came out on top, but usually only allowed because on last page they usually were pictured shaking the hands of good ole Tommy...That was allowed.

Yep to the victors the spoils....Victor..now that was a good comic...no Germans ever won in that one...Except against Alf Tupper on the running track and not even then in rematch when he'd had his fish and chips.

When I was a bairn my granny and grandad had a horde of "Warlord" or "Victor" annuals for us to read when visiting.

My favourite was the strip called "hawkeye" or something similar, who as you can imagine was a sniper, but he was a GERMAN sniper. He was always up a tree or in a hedge and the story would be from both sides with Hawkeye always escaping his trackers at the end.

I haven't seen one for years but that was my memory of the strip.

I had this comic book as a kid. The Japanese won this one.

Well I suppose these comics were a kind of propaganda for kids. The Allies were glorious heroes and the Germans were bumbling storm troopers, panicked at the sight of the advancing British heroes and threw down their weapons shouting Kamerad, Kamerad!

Complete rubbish of course, but I guess it's entertaining for kids.

Fact was the German soldier was extremely skilled and their equipment far superior, at least in the early stages of the war.

I doubt the guys who fought the Germans saw them as bumbling idiots.

Way I see it, the Allies were very lucky that the Germans had an idiot like Hitler in charge, if they had a competent leader, the war may well have taken a different course!

    Hello AnywhereAnytime,

thanks for showing - I didn't know that they had these kind of comics written in Tagalog.
Well anyway - faking the battle of Baatan in regards to the Japanese loosing, would be difficult indeed.:D

There were German characters that would win each week in comics such as Warlord and Battle but the stories tended to be set on the Eastern front so they were only shown beating Russians. I always thought Karl Schaft deserved his own stories in Warlord instead of just getting beaten most weeks by Lord Peter Flint.

Yeah Del Boy, I used to get Warlord weekly as a kid, had forgotten about Hawkeye, but there was also Kampgruppe Falken, Iron Annie (both fighting the Russians) and the Shark (fought the Allies)

I also remember Hellman of Hammerforce on the Russian front. Good German vs. bad German ... and maybe a bit of cold war propaganda thrown in ;)
