Just picked up a Scandinavian KrumKake "flat-iron"? It makes a very thin cookie which by a picture I found appears can be curled resembling an ice cream cone. So once we figure out how this thing works I'll be able to add another different food I've tried.
I love Krumkake. I missed out on my Grandmother's Krumkake iron to my little sister when our Mother died. She also got the "rolling" tool and the lovely Oster Lefse griddle. The sad thing is, she doesn't cook worth a crap, and never used them. She gave 'em away years ago, and we didn't talk to each other for about a half year when I heard that. What does your "iron" look like? Is it one that fits over a burner on the stove top? Those are the best, there are new ones made that have their own heating grids in them, and they stink. Got to find that "rolling" tool to make them right, after you cook them for a few seconds really, you tun them out and while the are still warm and flexable you roll the little think "cookie" around the tool and set it aside. The firm up and then you can do what you like with them. My favorite was filling them with whipped cream and different fruits, peach cubes were my favorite. My mouth is watering just writing this stuff down. Damn you to hell (just kidding), now I can't have one!
Gee I'm really sorry Clint. I just thought the "iron" type thing was kinda' neat. We're staying at my Aunts house waiting for the spring thaw and construction of our house. My Aunt is now in an assisted living villa, (more for the occasional helping hand than anything else) but she has all the goodies to bake, cook and make just about anything you can imagine. She has told us to use any and everything we like. Already found the roller, spices, flour and farm fresh eggs from my Sisters chickens. The KrumKake maker is the one that sets right over the burner. It was made in Minneapolis Mn. Brand name Nordic Ware. Now we don't have peaches but we do have a full bag of frozen strawberries, some mixed fruit and plenty of whipped cream. I'd post a picture but I don't want to upset you more than I already have. Wow !! You're right, these things ARE good.
Does the same people make MRE's for y'all make them for us? If so, and they are that bad, then the troops should be ready for a revolution. Let them eat MREs. Maybe c-rats weren't that bad afterall.
I tried the Brains and eggs when I was a kid. I was spending the night with a family so I could attend a Boy Scout meeting. I lived out in the country and they were in town. It wasnt too bad until they told me what I was eating. I remember it vividly!! She said you are from the country, I bet you love this. The other odd thing was squid jerky. Found that in a store in Korea. Now the thing I couldnt eat was a baby octopus and it wasnt fried! people ate them whole. I would guess like eating a goldfish for a fraternity initiation.
Hi Clint, id definately try that Spuds dish as I like all the ingredients in the making of it ;-)) At least we know that Ange doesn't only eat Blutwurst. :-D
Thats in Kandahar mate, to be honest though when I was there I couldn't be bothered to fight my way to the front of the massive queue of loggies US Army and RAF types (they live round the corner, we had to walk miles to get there). There is one in Bastion but it's normally closed down for health reasons. To be honest I ate dinner with the Afghan National Army the other day and it had no affect on me (quite nice actually) whilst a pizza from the place up here had me dashing for cover every few minutes. Don't knock it, it works pretty well! We all eat fritters, this is just a mars fritter! They also do curly wurly and cream eggs which are pretty good.
Heh heh, Wienerschnitzel, Jagerschnitzel and das Schwartzwalden Cake not Chermin? tell that to ze restaurants that served them ;-)) Just kidding but, I had Wienerschnitzel w/ either apfelsaft or apfelsorle (I forget exactly what the drink is called? ) but the U 181 Vets bought Susanne and I Wienerschnitzel with that bread ball side dish and pommes Frites-when we attended their reunion the first day, then the next day, they paid for our lunch meal when we went to some sports bar/restaurant-in Bad Camberg. Then in Hagen at Remy Schrijnens haus-we had Hungarian Goulasch with some Bier, Vino, Cognac and I had some water as the other stuff only made me thirstier ;-)) In Lubeck, I had Hackfleisch at a restaurant that was located across the street from a boardinghaus where Major Rommel and Guderian lived at for awhile ;-)) The best breakfast I had in Chermany waa when we stayed at that Botel in Wilhelmshaven. The biggest part of the breakfast was American style-but they did serve those 2 minute soft-boiled eggs-which I couldnt eat as I cant stand runny eggs-unless the are American style-which are called Eggs over easy or another style called: Sunnyside up-those styles I love and I love to sop up the runny yoke with toast Oh nand, they had American cut Bacon, scrambled eggs, and I forget what else?-oh andhad Oranges with it as well as grapes and bananas. The one German food item I ate with that meal was one or two of those small Brots-rolls. One had birdseed on top andthe other had some oatmeal pieces on top-those I never tired of-but I did get tired of Nutello-pretty quick and missed American Jelly. I did try and like some marmalades-but I just couldnt stand that Nutello stuff. The first 2-3 times it was OK but after that it was monotonous. The best Wienerschnitzel I ate was at The Red Ox (Zum Rotsen Ochsen (SP????) Gasthaus in Heidelberg. ;-)) And sure, id love to be a guest there sometime, just cant afford it now but hopefully in about 2 yrs. Reason being is that I need to save money for another car=and a few guns ;-)) Oh and, just wai and get a load of the possible next twelve photos I am trying for. One of em has GJ Heneral-Julius "Papa" Ringel in it. My other Rigel snapshot somehow got misplaced and is now lost to history-damn it.
Hi Richard, those too are here-the Twix and snickers. Guess who is doing them here? you guessed it-a couple of British guys who own a restaurant here in the States. I can't remember where they ar elocated at but they have been profiled on the Food Network a couple of times. They even have fried twinkies-I never cared for twinkies but do like Zingers. As for fried zingers-I think ill pass on those too ;-)) Whats next? fried Coke? oh I forgot, some guy already did that. However, I have not heard of battered and deep fried tea leaves----yet. If they do that to my English Breakfast and Earl Grey teas? ill start a fragging riot they will never forget ;-)
I actually had Currywurst mit Mayo anf Pommes Frites at someplace that Susanne and I walked to from the Gasthaus zur Rose in Dingelsdorf-near Konstanz) this place resembled an American Biker Bar from the 1970s-was very crowded but, as we both ordered the same thing-it was a darn good meal ;-)) I didn't drint Bier thoug and has some luke-warm water. Man, whats up with you guys not liking ice cubes in your drinks? ;-)) Speaking of mammouh Texas-sized Burgers-if you ever come to Texas, ill treat you to the best burger you will ever have-which is at a great place called: Walbangers. They have burgers from as light as a 1/2 pounder up to a 15 pound hamburger. Of course the 15-pounder is for more than one eater  You will have to get one of their stuffed burger specalties-like my favorite-which is a stuffed bacon-cheeseburger. The cheese is Cheddar cheese, the Bacon is Hickpry-smoked and is thick-sliced. They cut the patty and insert the cheese and bacon. With this you also get their spicy curly fries A burger from their pace will be THE BEST one you ever ate. Now if you come here to Austin whilst I am still residing here-a few places I had some good burgers from are: the Red Robin restaurant, Five Guys Burgers, Frans Burgers, Hills Cafe and a couple of other joints ;-)) They were very goof from all those paces. There are several other places that I will eventually get around to visiting befoe moving back to Corpus Christi.
I almost bought some Lederhosen when I was in Konstanz. What stopped me from doing so was the price-which is I recall? was around 900 Deutschmarks or even higher. I took a look at some prices and said no-way. Anyway, if ya gotta know what I might look like wearing Lederhosen-just picture a shorter Chevy Chase in: National Lampoons European Vacation-and you will know what I look like wearing them. However, take Chevy Chases head and replace it with the head of the Cherman he punches in the face-and place that guys head on a slightly shorter Chevy Chase body, and wallah-thats almost what I would have looked like. PS, I still want one of those pointy-topped ""Alpine Yodelers"" caps. If I wore it while living here in Austin, i'd fit in perfectly with the population because they are ALL wierd.
I had Corn Fritters for the first time ever-and it came with the home made Chicken and Dumplings meal I ate at Hills Cafe. Their version of one of my alltime most favorite meals was fairly tasty. Their C&D consisted of Chicken of course, but also had sliced Celery, Onion and Carrots in it and their "Dumpling" actually came out placed on top of it all and resembled a large suger cookie. Their version was pretty darn good and I will be back there to eat it again. Sad thing is, is that they only serve it on Tusdays at lunchtime and only while it lasts.
has anybody ever tried deep fried oreos cookies? or how about deep fried chocolate covered twinkies?? Puts that fried mars bar to shame! I never tried them , i'm too afraid my pancreas might explode! i can feel my arteries clogging just looking at the pictures
Well the cadbury's cream eggs like to commit suicide. YouTube - Cadbury Cream Egg Suicides http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQyA8AW_R6Q
Hi Suzie, talk about having a major coronary-just looking at the fried oreos and twinkies-makes me feel like having not just one heart attack, but at last three of them. Actually, those chocolate-covered twinkies are do-able. Richard-instead of fried, I had a baked one ;-))
Ah yes, another American classic ;-)) Bill Murray was great in eating that snickers bar he found in that swimmingpool.
Throw some coleslaw on with the fries shoved in that burger and you've got yourself a genuine Pittsburger. Who needs a fork when it's all shoved together? I can't say i've gone quite as crazy food wise as some of you lot... I've mostly stuck to ostrich jerky and turtle soup... But I can throw my bid in with a dish that my German teacher served up one day. I guess it was an old Pennsylvania Dutch recipe called Sei Mal, or more properly, Schwein Magen. Yes, yes, pigs stomach, stuffed with sausage, potatoes and some other veggies and such. Though i wasn't brave enough to actually eat the stomach (my friend did and said it wasn't bad) I did eat the stuffed contents and it was delicious enough for me to have it again for lunch that day.
