US 85th Infantry Division History and Action Reports from WWII

Hi Steve,

Can I please have a copy of the After Action reports of the 337th Infantry Division? My Grandfather, Pfc. Edward J. Bukowski, served in this Division and will be celebrating his 90th birthday in December. I am trying to put together a biography for this celebration

The Action Report I have is for the entire 85th Infantry Division.

I do not have action reports solely for the 337th Infantry Regiment, but they are mentioned in the Division reports.

Unfortunately, my file is too large to e-mail or even post here. I will eventually rescan at a lower resolution and hopefully this enable me to do those things.

I am trying to find information on my father, Albert Henry Brucken (Cookie). I found a placque that says "403rd F. A. Hqtrs. Btry. 85th Division ETO. I want to have his flag put in a case with the dates of his service. I contacterd the NARA and they said his records were destroyed in the fire in 1973. Can anyone help me?

 

Hi! It's been a long time since I've been here but finally came through with the GO for my grandfathers Silver Star award. Many thanks to my aunt for her hard work in tracking this down! There is lots of info here that I hope can help others too. My grandfathers info (PFC Joaquim Marques) is on page 3!

 

I'm interested in General Orders (GO) #13 and #47 from the 338th Infantry Regiment, 85th Division. These GOs are referenced in my later Father in Law Daonald L. Walker's discharge in which he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Thank you in advance for any assistance. ~Gary

 

Does anyone have a copy of General Orders No. 9, Dept. of the Army, 21 Oct. 1947 for the Presidential Unit Citation for the 338th Infantry Battalion for Mount Altuzzo, Italy for the time period of 13-18 September 1944?

 

I've got a copy of the Division history. I'll see if it has a copy included.

My great-uncle James M Lamb was one of the brave men who won the Silver Star. He was a member of HQ, 85th Infantry Division, and I looking for a copy of General Order No. 27 (1945) and any information regarding his specific actions in battle.

Thank you! I appreciate your assistance. Also, I did see the information on militarytimes.com. My great-uncle would not speak of his time during the war, but my grandmother (one of his sisters) told me that he took a machine gun nest in Italy with a rifle and hand grenades. I would like to find any documentation on his actions and plus get a better understanding of his role in the unit. Thank you again for your help.

85 US Inf Div, with 88 US Inf Div, were the two Divs of II (US) Corps who broke through the Gustav Line down on the coast in May 44 and finally unlocked the German defences after nearly four months of disappointment. It was quite an achievement and, with the French Expeditionary Corps on their right, they achieved stunning success.

I stand on the ground ever couple of months running battlefield studies and, each time, I am amazed by what was achieved.

My father-in-law was mortar in Company M, 339th. At the start of Diadem they were positioned just south Tremensuoli about 300 meters. Got any pictures?

Thanks for the link, Steve. CARL's search engine is a mystery to me. I do a search for the 85th and find everything but the 85th.

See post #33. I was wondering if the docs you had contained anything on Silver Star recipients.

 

BTW, b.wldrp, I did check the Division history and found no listing of SS recipients. That's not too surprising, though. The only decorations that received special mention were MoH recipients and DUCs (Distinguished Unit Citations).

If you don't have your great uncle's discharge records, you can request them from the NARA. However, you will need to track down his ASN (Army Serial Number). We can help you with that, but we'll need a bit more information: DOB, city/county/state of residence when he enlisted.

I would also make sure to ask relatives for old photos, newspaper clippings, correspondence that they might have. They can sometimes be a treasure trove of information. I have found that even 2-3 year later, I still have relatives providing things to me about my 2 great uncles.
