A new Russian history book for schools, approved by the Putin Government, glosses over Stalin’s Terror and other truths. This article came out in Dec 1 2009.

In Russian schools, they call it “positive history” behind it is Putin. In 2007, he told educators that the country needed a more patriotic history. Putin condemned teachers for having “porridge in their heads”, attacked some history textbook authors for taking foreign money “naturally they are dancing the polka ordered by those who pay them” and announced that new history textbooks were on their way. Within weeks, a new law was passed giving the state powers to approve and to disallow history textbooks for schools.

Aleksandr Filippov a Positive History Man “It is wrong to write a textbook that will fill the children who learn from it with horror and disgust about their past and their people. A generally positive tone for the teaching of history will build optimism and self-assurance in the growing young generation and make them feel as if they are part of their country’s bright future. A history in which there is good and bad, things to be proud of and things that are regrettable. But the general tone for a school textbook should still be positive.”

Igor Dolutsky, the author of a history textbook that has been dropped by the Kremlin, stated concerning “positive history”? “It’s an appalling idea which hinders proper teaching in schools. School history should not create patriots, it should teach children to think. Putin’s task is to rule a state edging towards totalitarianism.”

    And so it goes on...

When this sort of 'thought control' ceases in Soviet....errr...Rusland, then we might trust their official version of history.

Until then, it's the same old Stalinist "Ministry of Truth", systematically altering the records of the past to conform to the modern atittudes of "Big Brother"...err...Putin.

Not much has changed. The Russian shop window has been given a new coat of paint, but the building itself remains a dilapidated mess...

I have received a lot of "thank yous" from the former Soviet countries. They are amazed at the "untold story" aspect of the Western Allies. AND they are endlessly fascinated with the "unedited" speeches of Stalin and Co. and the Nazi-Soviet relations.

Western powers all have In the evolution of Humanity {and I use humanity loosely,} God Done barbaric if your surrounded by the Evidence AnMass. from before the Egyptians, Romans we glorify war and battles well the Winners do. Depicted on the wall chiseled in stone and we tend to bullish as add more then the story really was.

The Aztecs Incas +++ through Lavish Parties that lasted a Month ++ after great victories and slaughtering 100,000++ Prisoners and sacrifice them on Alters to please their Gods for the Battles great success as victory . Then depicted their Great Victories as they chiseled them on the Walls of their Temples, as their version of the event.

Many historians have written books that favour or Glorify one side with half or inaccurate accounts of events, part of the Human species psychological factor of dominance, acknowledging the pride we are predators.

Some stories people add as the story is told many times by many individuals, You can call that a Creative licence.:D

In the US Texas is now rewriting History while others are protesting this action.

I've been in 72 countries at least over night. (And about half again that many if you count "passing through".) One thing I noticed was that each country had folks who were convinced that their own nation had "won" WW2. It plays to the locals and that means it makes money. And the locals want to know what their parents, grandparents, etc., "did in the great war". So fanciful embellishments are no surprise anywhere.

However, when it comes to throttling down information to the point where "we did all the REAL fighting", nobody can touch the Soviets.

Spainard, that is an reaction to decades of Leftist reinterpretation of history. The New York Times doesn't like it because it is a Left Wing newspaper.

The fact is both sides have taken turns twisting history. That is why we have so many who readily denounce the decision to drop the A-bomb who know next to nothing about the particulars or those who were CHe Guevarea shirts while belonging to Amnesty International.

History is not black and white. It is complex. For example, whites brought african slaves to the US, but how many know that whites bought the slaves from other Africans? How was it that Cortez was able to get tens of thousands of natives to help vanquish the Aztecs? Clearly, the Aztecs had created much ill will, but that is NEVER TALKED about.

Why? Because it complicates the agenda of the teacher. A honest teacher will teach history in all its moral ambiguity. We have so very few honest teachers nowdays. They are tools of the ideology they champion.

I certainly agree with GOM. History suffers in all spheres.

At least, though, we in the West have no government body dictating as to how we should write it. You are free to go with what you can cobble together from the sources here, so our results are much wider and varied.

I noticed the lack of reaction to Eric Nave and James Rusbridger. Nave, using documents that should have been desroyed but turned up in Australian files, out and out accused the the United States intelligence services of total and utter ignorance to codebreaking work that he was involved with. When I was still wargaming, it appeared in our letters section of the A.H. General, after an article called "Myths of the Pearl Harbor Attack" ran away with the readership. Several letter writers openly questioned the article, citing Nave and Rusbridger, and wondering aloud at the official version of events. This sort of debate is, apparently, just not possible in modern Russia, or at least not without being ground down by modern politicians seeking to 'correct' the record.

At least we can say that of Western historical publishing and journalism. If you can prove it, it will, (eventually), become accepted. This does not seem to be the case in Eastern Europe.

Just as an aside, I have in my possession a Che Guevara cigarette tin. I happily show it around to cheapen the image of a left wing imbecile I particularly detest. I believe both sides of plitics are screwed....it's all about keeping those in power on their arses whilst the rest of we poor slobs have to tow the line. Politicians and military powerbrokers are playing with the lives of ordinary folk, all in the name of feathering their own nests. They gag the media, and practice 'thought control' on a grand scale.

    Nuff said.....

I wish you were right VOLG, but there are numerous taboos that you'd better not mention, even in some western countries. Freedom of speech is a theory, but believe me there are some journalists who are forced to resign and historians that are censored too.

Virtually every history of the war is going to be written from the biased point of view of the author. No surprises here. ;)

Quite true. Historians have to decide what to put in and what to leave out. That alone makes for bias. I have to decide what documents to put online and what "can wait". As I'm plowing through 5124 pages of speeches I have to look at each one and say, "That's relevant to WWII, that's not". If I'm not sure, it goes online.

    Gentlemen...I ask all of you...

Is there a government department telling you what to publish before you have put pen to paper or typed a word?

    No.

You are free to write what you wish...you just have to source it so that, empirically, your case is proven. Your peers will judge you in this, presenting their own evidence to the contrary, or vindicating your viewpoint. You may be shouted down, or wind up being labelled as an "authority" on the subject. It's all up to how you present your research, and argue your case.

There is no government edict telling you what you must write before you write it. This is what we are complaining about, not "bias".

The Russian government continues to try to cover it's tracks by doing something that no Western academic would put up with in his right mind. If our fathers fought for anything at all, and judging from past opinions on this website, they WERE fighting for something, it was for the FREEDOM to at least argue their case before their peers, not to simply tow the governemnt line for the sake of it.

If you truly believe that as an alliance, we fought for something other than big business profits, then this should raise your eyebrows. If it doesn't, then most of what we have to say on this website is a SHAM, and our Fathers and Grandfathers really did die for NIX.

    I don't believe that.

Maybe George S. Patton Jnr was correct in his assumption that we should have turned every captured German soldier around and kept them fighting. The Germans always said that their biggest enemy was in the East. It is attitudes like this that vindicate Patton and the Germans, and make us look like historical FOOLS.

I will continue to oppose the efforts of the Russian government for as long as I have fingers to type, and breath to exhale .My country may not be the free country that it purports to be, but I have something on my side that those Russian idiots don't.

The need for the TRUTH....whatever the cost. We owe it to every one of our veterans who fought or died in WW2.

It's up to US...............Lest We Forget

One only has to read some of the current textbooks of the US state run school systems to know many are trying to rewrite our history. It may be a shorter time than you think before our government tells us what we can and can't print.
If I say "The Bible says the only way to God is through His son Jesus.", I can almost be charged with a hate crime.
Our freedoms are being taken away a little at a time here. I feel bad for those in countries who have lost their freedoms, or have never had the freedom to think without retribution from their own government.

People all over the world will challenge evangelism for it's own sake, just as they should challenge historical whitewashing.

People wishing to live in ignorance of modern science can also live in ignorance of modern medicine. When you get cancer, prayer alone will not cure it. When you design a bridge, you do not do so with 'faith' in mind that it will stand freely without crashing to the ground of it's own weight. You mathematically prove the integrity of the structure before you lay a single block for it's construction.

Other examples are un-necessary. Practicality of logic will always overcome evangelistic ignorance.

    So it is with history.

Endless repetition of "the word" does not consign it to the category of TRUTH. Truth is not always "self evident", it must be brought into being by intellectualism, in the same manner that freedom just doesn't 'occur', it must be brought forth, kicking and screaming, from between the thighs of the ignorant bitches of this world.

Laying down and letting it all happen without protest is intellectual and moral cowardice of the highest order. One may as well be in "Holocaust Denial", for it amounts to the same intellectual line of reasoning......

I appeal to you all as people far more intelligent than that. Don't let these archaic fools rob you of your right to hear the truth. FIGHT, good people...FIGHT for your precious children, FIGHT for your right to be heard......FIGHT IT!

Nothing you do will be more important.

Do I have to feed you lines from your own country and it's historical past?

"Give me liberty, or give me death." (Patrick Henry)

"A government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from this earth." (Lincoln)

And from others....ORWELL warned you many years ago...

    "Freedom is the freedom to say 2 + 2 = 4."

"War is Peace, Freedom is slavery, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH."

    "L'audace, l'audace, toujours l'audace!" (Frederick The Great)

"Hell!...We are going to have to fight them sooner or later....Why not do it now while our Army is intact and we can have their hind end kicked back into Russia in three months? We can do it easily with the help of the German troops we have, if we just arm them and take them with us. They hate the bastards." (G.S. Patton)

And if we could stop the creationists from telling us what to teach in science class it would be even better.
We should teach astrology and alchemy in school. Teach the controversy!
