From What I understand, both those requests were not unheeded, but denied in a way. The US has a law that I'm not to familiar with so apologies If I'm a little off. Basically, both Norway, and France, as well as a few others have offered assistance IF the US were to waive a law that permits only US BUILT ships to operate in coastal area's. The Law had been designed more for dredges and other such types of shipping, which would include the offered items. Perhaps Clint would be better able to explain it, but that is my understanding of the delcined assistance.

Hi Mike, thanks for telling us about this law. Do think the law will be waved soon ? Not to mention that cleaning boats are small vessels that could be built rapidly and sailed under the U.S colours if patent is granted to the U.S by the inventors. It's a matter of emergency now and BP has lost many precious weeks . The Norwegians have a great experience with Oil matters, the Dutch are great engineers regarding deep water matters and the French have experienced three huge Oil spills these last years (Amoco Cadiz, Erika, Prestige) and have a lot of technology to share . It would be a waste , not to use all these offers of assistance.
But maybe we could open a thread for this topic?

Saw Caribou Barbie's "book" in Border's yesterday. Then I saw the book on the next rack. The pairing was obvious. (Sorry about the fur, new photo that hasn't been saddle-broken yet.)

I found a bit more about the law I was talking about. It is the Merchant Marine Act of 1920. Basically it requires that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports be carried in U.S.-flag ships, constructed in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens, and crewed by U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents. It was last waived during relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina by then President Bush. I do not think at this time that Obama will waive it again as so far he has said he deems it as unnecessary. A shame really.

I've read somewhere (can't find it now that I'm looking) that the Soviet Union had 5 oil spills similar to the one we are experiencing. There solution was to detonate a nuke near the leak, causing the shifting ground to seal the leak. Apparently it had a 80% success rate, though I don't know the environmental effects of doing such.

    All right I got one,

Maybe the reason the US has refused or ignored offers from around the world because they think themselves so superior they don't need the help from those pitiful other countries.:D

Don't bother throwing me out, I will do it myself...:p

Those are some very good comments. And the idea of 'nuking' the Gulf of Mexico has this strange appeal for some reason. I suppose that (a nuclear weapon) could possibly burn off most of the residual natural gas and floating surface oil not to mention all those pesky fish and birds. Maybe just to be safe they could try a "Bunker-Buster" bomb first though. Keep up the good answers and questions, it's nice to see everyone getting along.

Obama is hiding behind the Jones Act to please his union constituency at the price of the enviroment and the well being of the people of the Gulf coast. Must smell really great down there now:rolleyes:. Besides the obvious mess, oil has an awful odor when spilled in quantity and burns the sinuses. Going to be more of a real mess if there is a hurricane.

On behalf of the United States of America, I apologize for this pathetic goon in the whitehouse, for not accepting the help of other nations for the clean up. Since the US has been so generous in past helping out nations like Haiti and the nations of the 2004 Tsunami, along with countless others in the past. It would have been nice to have been the recipient of international good will.

That apology we don't hear from the bumbling professor and his Gong show administration.

Carl, perhaps not imprisonment, but come November the winds of impeachment will blow his way.

Failure to protect the citizens of the US on the border.

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, So help me God”

Failure to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States which he said he would do under oath.

Bribery of candidates for not running in a campaign, three counts.

In the words of Charlie Daniels

"That's how you do it son....";):D

Ok Carl, now you deserve the ultimate one:

"Dusty hill should get a shave" :D:D

Peter no apologies needed , you don't have to be embarrassed for the failures of Bp and politicians, we have those guys here too and except pay taxes and clean the mess, there isn't much we can do about it

Mon Ami, Embarrassment is not the emotion in play. More in the line of "Don't Tread on me"

I beleve the Vatican still has a working sample of that very useful device for dealing with politicians. Unfortunatly they are not willing to lend it were it's needed.

I got your point Oberst , I just thought it was nice to add it wasn't your fault anyway.

Regarding the guillotines, many working ones are still kept stored in the country (as if they will ever be used again ) until they will be sold , if not already, to museums.
This being said , fire squads were used to , particulary in the army.
