My Grandfather, Pfc. Edward J. Bukowski, will be celebrating his 90th Birthday this December. As such, I am comlining a biography on his participation in WW2.

He was in Company H of the 33th Infnantry Division.

If anyone has any information they could share with me, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thank you,
    Mary Bukowski

Hello Mary, and welcome. Biak has given you a good head start. If you know whether he served in Europe or the Pacific, it might help us to narrow down his service. Have you managed to get hold of his discharge papers? They would be of great service as well. While it might be too late to get his data for December, you can try getting his records from NARA. Check this thread for details on how to do it. http://www.ww2f.com/military-servic...esting-copies-military-personnel-records.html

Good luck and keep us up to date on your progress.

Thank you so much; I am having a great time putting together the pieces of the puzzle of this epic time in my Grandfather's life.

Here is what I know so far:

He enlisted on the 1st of December 1942 and started active service on the 8th of December 1942.

My Grandfather trained at Camp Van Dorn, MS in 1943.

He went overseas on the RMS Andes on the 1 of Jan 1944 arriving in N. Africa on 9 Jan 1944.

He served in Company H of the 337th Infantry.

He earned his CIB in April 1944.

He earned a Bronze Star Medal for Valor.

Battle campaigns: Rome-Arno, Northern Appennines, and PO Valley.

After his service with the 337th (some time in May 45) my Grandfather was assigned to the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division.

He returned home with the 10th mountain division on August 11, 1945 aboard USS Mount Vernon AP-22.

I am still trying to figure out how The Pfc Edward J. Bukowski listed on page 451 of the book "History of the 3rd Division in WWII" and was a member of the 7th Infantry Regiment plays into the mix.

Maybe my Grandfather was brought over with the 3rd on the RMS Andes?

    Could that be right?

Thanks for all of your help; I am having a lot of fun putting this all together and am so very blessed to live in the USA!

    Thanks,
    Mary

Mary, millions of soldiers served during WWII. It would not be so strange if there were more than one Edward J. Bukowski among those millions.

    Hi Greg,

Thanksfor the message...I am just trying to confirm that the two EJB's are not the same.

My Grandfather's name is fairly uncommon, I would think, and for there to be two Edward J. Bukowskis in the 3rd and 85th at that same time would seem to be quite unlikely. The 85th and 3rd did a good deal of joint fighting and there appears to have been some reorganizing/consolidating between the two divisions and I think that may explain his being mentioned in the 7th Infantry Regiment while his discharge certificate cites the 85th Division - 337th Regiment.

There are also several other family members over the years who have requested information on the 3rd's website for their Veteran who was also in the 85th Division and a few even in my Grandfather's 337th Regiment.
