This may be entirely outside the interest range of most people on this forum, but I was thinking that a forum about how people dressed in the forties, and how WWII and fabric rationing changed that would be interesting.

Or perhaps it would be better if it was about every day life and how WWII changed that especially on the home front.

That might not be a bad idea there merk.

They do have threads here about uniforms and such, but civilian fashion on the homefront might be interesting as well.

Furthermore, if they have the info here but spead around, it might be good to organize it.

Talk with a moderator about the idea. They might give you the job!

clothes rationing ww2 - Google Image Search

Google news archive also returns a lot of contemporary stuff from throughout the world, with many different attitudes expressed:

The Pittsburgh Press - Google News Archive Search

Got a bit distracted by this - For the UK, a search of Hansard throws up a great deal of parliamentary comment on austerity & clothing coupons - worth a shufti.

Clothes Rationing System (Hansard, 21 September 1948)

AUSTERITY SUITS (Hansard, 6 April 1944)

Discharged Men (Clothes Allowance). (Hansard, 28 July 1942)

    Women's Clothing (Hansard, 1 February 1944)

AUSTERITY CLOTHES (STOCKS) (Hansard, 10 February 1944)

I'm certainly not against it in the least.

Get some threads going on it, see how interest builds and I can make subforum for it somewhere.

A while back, we had a Dutch lady member on here who specialised in the re-enactment of wartime fashions.

Problem is I cannot recall her name just now.....

    merk,

There's no school like the old school - a lovely topic if I say so myself... the forties is one of my favorite decades in fashion. I find so much of my wardrobe today tailored around these classic depictions. Tie bars, wing tipped shoes, pleated pants and hats bring us back to a day of class and style. Even in a world of turmoil, the 40s produced some original looks that find root today. I know I'm slightly off topic here, so please forgive my detour :)

I think thats an awesome idea! Instead of just fashion, have like Home Front Forum, then have the fashion in their. Example can be way of life, eats, cars, everything! I love the 40's and 50's! You have my support! Good luck!

Yes. I think a Home Front Forum would be really cool. Much better than one devoted exclusively to clothes.

It would probably be a helpful resource for reenactors especially.

And thanks everyone for posting all those neat links
