While the Eastern campaign, late war, and armor and weapons are my main gig, the Battle for the Atlantic and the U-Boats have always fascinated me. After watching a few episodes tonight of the History Channel's "Battle for the Atlantic", it was brought to my attention that I've got nothing to read on this subject. And given how interesting the current read on the Bismarck is going... Any advice for a rather general, easy-reading book on the Atlantic battle and the U-boat campaign? Not looking for anything especially deep or technical, just a good read that gets to the major details and such. I'd do the whole Amazon etc. search, but I figure some of you gents are undoubtedly better resources than a search engine!
Business In Great Waters covers the U-Boat campaigns in both World Wars. Copies on Amazon are less than a £1... Here's a link to a collection of books that includes a brief synopsis of each one so you can determine if any of them meet your needs. Each one also links directly to Amazon for purchase. WWII Military History Books: U-Boats, the U-Boat War and the Battle of the Atlantic
Thanks for the info all around, gents. Any more ideas, keep'em coming- going to be a little while before the next book purchase!
I can't think of a book that I've read on The Battle of the Atlantic that I haven't liked. Fascinating history. For something a little bit different I would recommend the Legion magazine website www.legionmagazine.com/en/ . There are a lot of great articles in the "Military History in Perspective" section on the BotA, mind you the focus is on the RCN but they detail a lot of action between convoy escorts and U-Boats that you wouldn't find in a general history.
