My Grandpa and others... The guy with the mine detector is my Grandfather. Can you spot who any of the other guys are? The photo was taken outside Tripoli early in February 1943, 13 Field Company gave an exhibition of mine-lifting in conjunction with 51st Highland Division.
PM Winston Churchill, in a R.A.F. Uniform, cigar in his mouth, walking stick in his right hand. Richard V. Horrell
An interseting pic you have of your grandfather Ash. Could you tell us a bit more about it? Did your grandfather offer his thoughts on any of the men standing behind him?
I see a fat guy, with cigar & a long walking stick in the center. who of that description would hang out with Alexander?
Apparently the King was on this visit as well, and he often wore a uniform with almost no insignia, so it's just possible that the man talking to Churchill was he, although he seems to have rarely worn a hat, he did occasionally so it may be him. The height is about right.
Might the second from left be Monty? So here we have private ... holding the attention of the highest leaders of Great Britain.
I don't think so... he appears a little too tall for Monty, and he looks like he's carrying a camera, so he's probably a press photographer
The civilian in the hat looks remarkably like Eden - can't confirm he was there though, although he was in Tunisia in June again.
Left to Right Maj. C. P. Linsell, Lt.-Col. Jack Scott, Gen. B. L. Montgomery (in beret in background), a photographer (unnamed) and a unnamed civilian, Maj. Randolph Churchill, Lord Moran, Sir Alexander Cadogan, Lt.-Gen. M. C. Dempsey, Mr. Winston Churchill, Brig. K. Ray (behind my Grandad), Gen. Sir Alan Brooke, Maj. T. L. Gibbs and Gen. Sir Harold Alexander.
