I'm surprized this hasnt been disscussed before here...Anyway, whats your favorite horror movie?? Me, I'd have to say the ORIGINAL Nightmare on Elm Street. all horror remakes are usually crap. Ive heard that the remake of Elm Street was really lame.
Myself, I would have to say Nosferatu, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original), The Village of the Damned (original), The Wolf Man (1941), and the original Phantom of the Opera with Lon Chaney Sr., as well as his London After Midnight. The movie The Thing with James Arness as the "Thing" is pretty good, but more sci-fi suspense than "horror" really, so maybe that doesn’t really count. But as long as we are into "almost" horror, I guess that The Blob starring Steve McQueen should be included in the list. As a fellow who grew up on a farm, slaughtering animals for our own consumption, as well as hunting sort of made the "slasher/blood and guts" type movies less than real to myself. I don’t even mind the shots really, since most of the time their "fake" is just too obvious. I suppose I really prefer the "suspense" type films rather than attempts at giving me the "frights", or repulsing me with gore and such. Until you can have the odor of a rendering plant "piped in" for the scenes, the dead (walking as zombies, or lying in their graves) as repulsive just doesn’t cut the mustard.
I vote for Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1959), Them!,and It Came from Outer Space. Oh, and the Thing (early 50's) Werewolf in London wasn't bad either!
I resent that Ulrich! It has a great soundtrack! I always liked the original Halloween. Then it might be the Evil Dead movies with Bruce Campbell. It's hard for me to choose!
Come on guys, poor/bad or silly movies aren't "horror" movies. Those are just badly made movies, or poorly researched, or badly premised. Now many of the newer "style" of slasher/gore horror movies qualify on all counts, they try to be "escapist" fictional shock movies on purpose.
The original "Friday the Thirteenth" was kind of spooky. There was one I'm not sure of the title, possibly "Clowns from Outer Space" that grossed me out. Clowns are scary enough but these had teeth like Piranha fish and ate people.
Tex, you're showing your age. Them might qualify as the scariest movie I saw as a kid. I watched it on TV a couple of years ago, and it was still scary. More recently, Silence of the Lambs (both book and movie) just about did me in.

I second The Others... if any movie can match the creepiness and surprise end of the Sixth Sense, perhaps beat it in both cases, it's that one. Also, a nice war theme for this forum. I also always like to rewatch 28 Days Later, the movie that made running zombies pop-culture.
"The Descent" "Event Horizon" Both had great casts, great dialog and event horizon especially, oh my that scared me the first time I saw it.
mine are paranormal activity the ring the exercist the shining the amitville horror ahhhh freaky stuff!
I love sci-fi and horror/suspense flicks. But "Event Horizon" was over the top for me. I willingly admit that when I watched it in the cinema, the movie got to me. Somehow, and I still can't explain it, a strong irrational fear came over me and I had to step out before the film's halfway point. The suspense got me and I couldn't handle it. That's the first and only time it happened to me. I particularly like "The Thing" with Kurt Russel. I have never seen the 1950's film with same title. Also, the zombie genre is a good way to pass the time. The Living Dead and its various spin-offs (comedy, horror or otherwise) get a laugh out of me. Maybe the "Resident Evil" series... somehow I enjoyed them. But the most innovative that I've seen in recent years is the Buffy the Vampire episode where there was no sound at all. Imagine finding yourself in a world where sound suddenly did not exist and you're about to face the bad guy and his monster minions...
I personally have a weakness for the classics, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Wolfman etc. Also films such as The Wickerman (the original not the remake) and The Witchfinder General with Vincent Price are a must watch when they are shown. I'm afraid I have no time for the modern torture porn that passes for horror these days.
Paranormal Activity was pretty spooky. athough it killed some of the 'scare factor' in it, when the theatrical ending, she ate the guy, then it said she ran off and no where to be found...but in the alternate ending, she slit her throat. the movie was said to be 'real'. anyhow theres a 2nd one coming up. i kinda want to see it.
