I think there are more inferred implications to the story than really exist and the entire incident is being over sensationalized. The victim was a tank commander in the IDF, that in and of it's self is not necessarily news worthy. The fact that his wife and children were also involved does raise the stakes a bit; however, him being a Rabbi is a non issue.

So why not take your own personal agenda of dull proselytising extremism to a site where it won't insult war dead by implication, and other men and women who fought for a good cause regardless of faith.
Maybe considering in the process the difference between 'An Extremist' & 'A religion', regardless of historical period.

    Just a thought.

Van Poop, I only posted these items about whats going on in the ME( and it still isn't looking great for some sort of popular democracy anywhere in the ME), NOT to insult muslims who served and died in the armed forces of the West which you brought up. Clint doubted the news story and I pointed out that there were other news stories about this vile attack. I think formerjughead has underestimated the impact of the attack on public opinion.

"Maybe considering in the process the difference between 'An Extremist' & 'A religion', regardless of historical period."

Well, that topic is very well addressed in the book "Politically Incorrect on Islam" which argues that Islam isn't a religion at all, but something very different in design and intent. But that's for another discussion.

I do not stoop to calling people names and try to be civil.

Same here and well said. I wonder why they never come out to preach against the "radical few" which in many peoples eyes in the West, would place them in a more positive light.

The Palestinian Prime Minister denounced the attacks (The Weasel leaves out this piece of information...) and a terror group had taken responsibility, how exactly is that a slam against democracy?

It would well serve the people of that region, Arab and Jew, to learn how to forgive thier enemies, otherwise they will always have a reason to get even with one another and will never know true peace. The US and Japan fought one of the bitterest, dehumanizing wars ever fought, but today we are doing as much as we can to help them in thier hour of need.

I agree. But the Jew-Muslim thing goes back to the 7th century. I just don't see either side emulating Japan & the US. Ever. Sad really

I once saw a very sad political cartoon which had a Isreali soldier and a Palastinian fighter. The Isreali asks him who he is and the fighter says 'I am the last Palastinian'. The Isreali says 'I am the last Isreali'. They move forward to embrace, then blow up. There is far too much truth to that cartoon I feel.

In the general area of Arabic revolution in present day....It will be interesting to see the comments from our, especially British leaders on the Saudi intervention in Bharain. After the rhetoric on Libya it will be interesting to see just how freedom is both measured and debated in the present UK leadership. And how Kuwait can be part of a force keeping down protest and driving troops into another country which is not threatened by any outside force is beyond me.

Here's the latest on the standing on democracy in Algeria:

Top Algerian Cleric Issues Fatwa Decreeing Democracy “un-Islamic”…

ALGIERS (Reuters) – The spiritual leader of Algeria’s influential Salafist movement has issued a 48-page fatwa, or religious decree, urging Muslims to ignore calls for change because he says that democracy is against Islam.
The fatwa by Sheikh Abdelmalek Ramdani, who lives in Saudi Arabia, comes at an opportune time for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika as Algerians watching protests in other Arab states have begun pushing their own political and economic demands.
“As long as the commander of the nation is a Muslim, you must obey and listen to him. Those who are against him are just seeking to replace him, and this is not licit,” Ramdani wrote in the fatwa obtained by Reuters.
“During unrest, men and women are mixed, and this is illicit in our religion,” said Ramdani, who claims several hundred thousand followers here.
Algeria has been shaken since January by a wave of protest sparked by a spike in food prices. The opposition has made several attempts to march in Algiers for democracy, transparency and a change of leadership.

Not sure if this really a decree (by Saudi guy) to not seek democracy in Algeria or to just prevent regime change in Algeria? Does it apply to the rest of the muslim world?

Big whoop, 85% of the Muslims worldwide are Suni, and have not ties to/nor follow Imams, nor religious dogma/doctrine. Out of the other 15%, they are split between Shi'ite (the largest minority), Sufi, Druze, and another group I fail to recall immediately. What exactly is you point here "texson"?

Do your really think that a "minority" religious group can influence all Muslims and change the structure of "whatever"? The evolution of the Iranian change wasn't exactly on that level, if you look at it with anything but "hindsight" and prejudice.

    Just a thought.

My understanding is that Fatwa's are simply decrees, they aren't really followed much, especially in Sunni Islam (the largest sect of Islam) but are popular in Shia Islam (although even that is by the minority of followers).

The Weasel isn't a very good source of news, the posts have a slant to them too, you should look elsewhere for your news IMO, I recommend BBC, Al Jazeera English, and PBS.

Weasel is a posting site of article from other news sources around the internet. And they do tend to show conservative viewpoints, but
ALL news (including Rueters which reported the fatwa) is slanted; the ones you mentioned are a little too PC and left for me.

PBS admits they are biased and still demands to be funded from Uncle Sugar's teat. Hows that for "fair and balanced"?:D

Admit I don't know much. Joe six pack opinion: Curious. Does Iran's Ahmadinejad believe in the 13th Imam( and all that it involves )? He rules a powerful nation, wants to vaporize Israel. Maybe his constituents don't believe in Imams, but the people who have their finger on the hot button do. Moderate Muslim's are not the problem. Extremism in any religion always spells trouble... Religion spells trouble...Pardon me.

However, if one takes all the "media" into consideration and balances them out generally the "fringe" appears to be, and confirms they are just that. PBS doesn't admit they are "biased", a member of the group was ambushed by the O'Keefe liars and that matters not. He was fired for his remarks, as inappropriate as they were. And the PBS/NPR receives about 2+% of their funding from the government. The loss of that two percent isn't all that big a deal, what makes it a big deal is that some think they are "funded" by the government, when they aren't.

If NPR is so good why does it need Fed $$$$ to survive? Any Fed $$$ shouldn't be spent on it at all.

All news is biased, those three are just the least biased of the bunch. :p

I like news sources that just report the news, they give both sides of the story without giving you their own personal views on how it's some sort of a conspiracy or how X group is wrong, or what Charlie Sheen had for breakfast, etc.

If we have trillion-dollar issues like oil, corporate dependency, war, wall street speculation, etc, then why are we wasting time discussing the $2.4 million that we give to NPR every year? thats the real issue. cut the funding, they only get 2% of their funding from the gov't anyway! But this thread is drifting off course
