Did they retain the ABLs or were they removed?

Yes, all four were still there. I'm actually still in the car riding back. I'll get the rest of the pics up later. Just tonight they are displaying a new turret exhibit where you will get to simulate firing one of the 16" guns. Looked really interesting but it was not open to the public yet.

Thanks for the pictures! My vote in another thread on "Favorite Ships" was the BB's and the New Jersey has always been my favorite of the favorites!

The New Jersey, Missouri and Iowa are to be maintained in a state of "preserved readiness", as there is nothing in the "Naval Gunfire Support Doctrine" to replace them. The USS Iowa (BB61) is still sitting Suison bay as it has been deemed "Might come in handy should the need arise". There seems to be nothing capable of chucking a 2,700 lb projectile 20 nautical miles, without the aid of micro processors, in the current Naval inventory.

    A few more.

    1. A couple ships on the Philadelphia side of the river. I know the one was an armored cruiser from the Spanish-American war. I don't know about the other.
    2. Crew quarters
    3. A sixteen inch shell and powder bag
4 and 5 are both from inside the turret

Too bad they don't have anything near that 16 inch projectile as a size reference as they are impressive when you are close to one of them. It's been many years, but as I remember they're right at 6 feet tall.

That would be USS Olympia, Dewey's flagship, IIRC. The four-master would be a China Clipper, akin to Cutty Sark, I do believe.

These three pics are from the CIC. The battle lanterns were the only light so I'm pretty happy with the images. The last two screens in the last pic are for the Harpoon and Tamhawk missles.

Mike, and everybody else, when I get in to places like that I use a monopod to keep the camera steady for the exposure. They have a single foot, so they don't take up a lot of space, and you can use them to get video as well. I have one where I raised the monopod over my head and got shots nobody else could get. And you can collapse it on the camera to about two feet, so it's not in the way when you're not using it. I frequently use mine in lieu of a cane. If I can't have both, for whatever reason, the cane stays in the car.

Last two.1. A poem found on one of the hatches. It reads:
The returning once more, to sleep
Of this great ship is both unfair
and unjust to her and country.

She is freedom for those willing to fight for it.
She has brought pride to her
    country and most important to
the men she saved on land and at sea.

If she is called again to serve us
She’ll be ready and willing to [be]
    more than ever.

For who of us can say what price
Is paid for freedom or that this
country is so great or powerful enough
    to put her to death.

    2. A side view of the starboard side of the ship. Taken just forward of the after 16" turret while leaving the ship.

When the Peleliu was in LBNSY back in '85 the New Jersey and Missouri were both there at the same time. Two worlds of hurt, on opposite sides of the pier. I was suitably impressed. I took careful note of the ABLs that were being added. And I went on board Big Mo to see the plaque. Awesome.
