Meanwhile, here in Northern Ireland we've been washed away for the last few weeks, with several major storms, and bad flooding in many places - that good weather over England stopped somewhere over the Irish Sea! No "Indian Summer" for us...
That wet snow is a pain in the posterior. If it's not taking down power lines it's clogging the snowblower or breaking your back trying to shovel it. We get our share of it, usually in the Spring. So far, we've been warmer and dryer than usual, though the Arctic cold is no doubt coming our way soon. We don't call it Minne-so-cold for nothing!
Was so nice here in northern Michigan that I didn't put on more than my long sleeve upland bird hunting shirt on our 10 mile hunt hike today.
"Arctic" cold front came through Texas this weekend. I think it dropped below 50 the other night...letting the dogs out for a 3am I-can't-hold-it-Daddy potty break (I swear, I've got a beagle with a bladder that belongs in a hamster), I could even see my breath. 'Course, that might not have had much to do with the temperature...hehehe Actually wore long pants and shoes-n-socks since Thursday, and the heater even kicked on once.
We've had a pretty nice October here, especially compared to the cold cold May we had. It has been getting down to 15-20 degrees at night though. We'll be breaking ice in the water tanks for livestock soon UGH!
It was nice early this morning when we were playing soccer, except when the wind was blowing hard, which was pretty much the whole game. Then it was cold, especially when, like RabidAllen in Texas, the temp was about 40 less than the day before. Those children on the field were about to freeze, or so they thought.
What kind of wind do you get in your area? We had 40 mph gusts today. That's not an everyday thing, but not unusual either. I can't wait until Monday, we'll be back into the 60's. That is gorgeous weather in WY.
Hey Luke, ya' might explain that "so nice here" is when it's in the mid 30's. Spent most of the day outside myself 'playing' on the tractor doing maintenance on the road and it was 35F but Sunny. I'm still scratching my head as to why 35-40 here feels like upper 50's in Illinois? Got up to 47 and a flannel shirt was 'almost' too much. Have some relatives in Northern Colorado who were without power for three days due to a storm that hit a last week. Hope Dave weathers (sorry) the storm and stays warm.
Well we weren't quite that cold! It was 45 when we left, about 40 when we came out of the woods. Man what a day. Didn't have much luck on the hunting front but we busted some new trails and found some spectacular scenery. My feet hurt today though! Getting ready to head out again. 7:22am and it's 29 degrees. Going to try and jump hunt some ducks this AM.
we've had ample frost mornings and the colours on the trees are the proof of it, interesting in contrast to the back eastern deciduous woods we have the colours at the base of thick tall evergreen firs and Ponderosa pines. send the cold weather here I luv it !
Erich I hear you. We are past our peak as far as color goes, but I found a ridge yesterday that overlooked some old growth maple and birch...still in full color and spectacular.
Bring it on I say! As a Colorado boy stuck in the somewhat lower 48 where it usually does not snow much I do miss it so! As Dave posted though, I hope those without power get it back ASAP as it sucks to be without! Been through that rodeo more times than I can count....thank god for generators tho!
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you'll get a break in the weather soon. Tonight was crisp. Had to put more logs on the fire as I cooked outside. A glorious stew of venison that I harvested last year, potatoes, carrots, corn, peas and onion that came from the in-law's garden. Fall was glorious today. Temped the dutch oven at 495 degrees. Cost me about 2 bucks worth of wood to cook, including browning the meat and a pan of corn bread in cast iron skillets. Cheaper than gas and got the wonder of the outdoors.
