    Hi everyone

Im new to the forum. My father recently showed me a few of my grandfathers things from the war.

There are stories behind each item. i'm hoping you can help me with some information on each item if possible. My grandfather (South African born) was based in Egypt, if my history has it right this was the area where the tank wars took place. General Erwin Rommel and his tanks..

1.) The hat my grand father wore. View attachment 14849

2.) Badges most likely sewn into clothing items, the Moth badge was most likley post the war. As for the South African badge with coat of arms i have no idea, i assume it may have been an accompyning badge on the clothing for the Moth meetings. View attachment 14847

3.)The flag, not very big, its about twice the size of a match box. According to my father, it was taken off a German tank in Egypt, or somewhere there abouts.. View attachment 14848

4.)My grandfhar apparently earned a number of medals. i dont know what they are called or what they represent. -_-The front.

-_-The back.. (There is also a pin, it looks like a little strip) *im sorry , i cant refer to the items properly, i have never served. if you can correct me please do*

Hello Mark and welcome to WW2F,

    your grandfathers medals are:

    the 1939-45 Star (top left)
    the Africa Star (bottom left)
the South Africa Service medal (top right)
The British War medal (bottom right)

    hope this helps

    - Maybe a mod will move this to the militaria section, other members will have a better chance of seeing your grandfathers items

I believe the Unitas badge is that of South African Commandos, but don't quote me on that as it may be a more general issue thing.

M.O.T.H is the 'Memorable Order of Tin Hats', a Veterans organisation. Looks like a cut down Blazer Badge:

The Flag is a German minefield marker, usually mounted on smallish metal pegs.

    Medals, top left clockwise.
    39-45 Star.
    Africa service Medal.
    War Medal for WW2.
    Africa Star.

Edit - sorry, cross-posted with Andy above.

Nice work, both of you. It tells where they came from as well as what they are. Good job.
