I haven't seen a thread specifically for things of this nature and a search failed to turn up anything similar. Every once in a while I find something that just catches my eye.
A man may conquer a million men in battle but one who conquers himself is, indeed, the greatest of conquerors. - Buddha
I forget the name of the fellow who wrote this, but I thought about it and I tend to agree; "History, is a record of events which ought not to have happened."
I think I'm going to put this on a piece of Birch bark and frame it. Choose wisely today, for you may pay a higher price tomorrow. History is also a reminder of the good that has been done. So far, Good has triumphed or else we wouldn't be here.
I don't know if any of my fellow Rogues are familiar with the author Michael Connelly, but the Harry Bosch series used that "good canine, bad canine" theme alot. He (Bosch) is a police detective who comes from a long string of foster homes, and he too heard that "feed the right dog" saying growing up in one of the holding orphanages. When I saw Biak's post, I immediately remembered that line, of course in the series it is a dog, not a wolf, but the sentiment is identical.
Johnny Cash followed this creedo, he said it was part of the reason he stopped his wild ways (that and June). While I have more of an appreciation of him now, he is a legend, I wasn't much of a Cash fan when I was a kid, but my father was. After Cash died, I watched a bio on him and heard this and I was impressed when he talked about this and his determination to feed the "good wolf" - and what a struggle it sometimes was for him (and his fellow highwaymen). And no matter how you say it, it is very true.
The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them. Samuel Clemens
I've read those books, Clint, and it seems that Bosch was talking about the same thing as Biak. I couldn't agree more. I live by the motto "never do today what you can put off til tomorrow."
It is inaccurate to say that I hate everything. I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible for public office. H. L. Mencken
As well as posting here, on AHF, ww2talk and helping run Feldgrau....I post regularly on one UK based "social" forum, Digitalspy. There, in the "general" section, there's often threads posted up asking what are our favourite things, or sounds, or experiences Being a quite....ahem..."freeform"....forum, the answers are many and various as you can expect - but I have a stock answer to what my favourite thing/experience/sound is, the same answer as Big C's ... You'd be amazed how many people cheer at the sentiment!
I believe that the German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer said this. Here is his O-ton: " History is the sum total of the things that could have been avoided!"
This one is a good one from a well known man: Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him. ~Dwight D. Eisenhower
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair. - Douglas Adams
Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Walk beside me that we may be as one. Ute proverb
