A message from a gold rush era gravestone

    I had seen this gravestone before when I was wandering around Haines, Alaska and when I was there this time (about 4 days ago) I got a picture.


    Kind of creepy.

    That's a little depressing. I wonder why anyone would put that on a gravestone.

    Did you notice his age? 25 years. I'm not sure if that makes it any less depressing, but it does put it in a different light.

    They young do have something that is both a curse and a blessing: ignorance of their own mortality.

    I am also impressed with the lettering. Carved into rock in 1902 and it looks like laser engraving.

    Kind of reminds me of a Sundial we have outside with "Tempus fugit" on it. Time Is Fleeting. We all must follow but hopefully after a long full life, unlike the poor George Paddy.
