As many times as i have seen both films, it never occurred to me until recently that they shared footage....or I should say, that Raid on Rommel used footage (extensive) from Tobruk starring George Peppard and Rock Hudson. I wonder why? Which flick do you prefer?
... that the movie Tobruk, and lesser cousin Raid on Rommel, were based on actual events? The ruse of a truck convoy of prisoners, German speaking Jewish guards, it was all real, even the target - Tobruk. In reality Operation Agreement took place about a month after Operation Jubilee i.e. the Dieppe raid, "Combined Ops." was involved, as were the RN, RAF, Commandos, Royal Marines, SAS, LRDG, as well as regulars, and like Dieppe, it was an absolute fiasco, of similar proportions, and for similar reasons. Monty was against Agreement, felt tarnished by it, CiC Med Fleet would end up losing his job over it all, but the operation was kept fairly hush, hush - movies not withstanding. Guess they didn't really learn that much at Dieppe, did they ... ?
At that time Mountbatten (of combined operations) was too busy covering his ass and trying to turn Dieppe into a propaganda victory by calling it a "dress rehearsal" for the D-Day landings. Ha!
