Zur Herstellung zusammenhängender Verteidigungslinie, Erleichterung der Pz.Abwehr und zur Möglichkeit des Herauslösens der Pz.A.A. ist zusammenhängende HKL an Bahnlinie Tunnel ndl. Hombourg – Brücke Moresnet gebildet worden.
To establish a cohesive line of defence, easier anti tank fight and to make it possible for retreat of Panzer AA also a cohesive main line of defense was established ( HKL-Haupt Kampf Linie) at railroad from railroadtunnel north of Hombourg up to Bridge of Moresnet.
Pz.A.A. seit Morgengrauen ndl. Groueulebach mit Schwerpunkt bei neu Moresnet und Auftrag bei Eynatten Verbindung mit 9.P.D. zu suchen. Bewegungsmöglichkeit durch Straßensperren gehemmt.
Verbindung mit Teilen 49.I.D. wird noch gesucht.
PZ A A since dawn Northerly of Groueulebach with main focus on Moresnet and is ordered to link up at Eynatten with 9th Panz. Div.
Manouverability is hindered by roadblocks. Connection with some parts of 49 Inf. Div not completed yet
Für späteres Einfließen der Div. Westwall kann als ostwärtigste Straße nur die von Moresnet über
Gemmenich nach Aachen benutzt werden. Alle Straßen ostwärts davon durch Sperren unpassierbar. Heute früh Lage ruhig, kein Feinddruck.
The only road to the East the Division can use to enter Westwall is the road leading eastwards from Moresnet via Gemmenich to Aachen. All other roads to east unpassable because of roadblocks. Situation quite this morning, no pressure from enemy.

K.G. bespricht Lage und betont, daß Jabotätigkeit unerträglich sei und jede Bewegung fast unmöglich macht, wie er es bei seinem gestrigen Besuch bei 9.P.D. selbst erfahren habe

Ia AOK – Ia:
Ia Armee wirft dem Gen.Kdo. vor, sich unberechtigt Pak.Abt.10.SS unterstellt zu haben.
Ia Armee accuses the Gen. Kdo of unauthorized adding Pak.Abt 10 SS to them.
Ia weist darauf hin, daß das Gen.Kdo. keinen Befehl des AOK bekommen hätte, die Pak-Abt. Abzugeben und auf den Befehl in der nacht vom 11./12.9. die Befehle zur Abgabe sofort herausgegangen wären.

Chef AOK – Chef: Chef AOK befiehlt, daß beim Ausweichen in jedem Falle der Anschluß zum rechten Nachbarn der Südteil des Brückenkopfes Maastricht sei.

Feindl. Infanterie geht zwischen Moresnet und Hergenrath über den Bach und sickert durch. Starkes Artl. Feuer im Raum Eynatten.
Vor starkem Inf.-Angriff und Panzerangriff eigene Linie auf Bachabschnitt nw. Moresnet zurückgenommen.
13:30 16 Panz Div reports:
Enemy infantry crosses stream between Moresnet and Hergenrath and seeps through. Heavy artillery fire in sector Eynatten. Because of heavy infantry an armor attack we retreated own lines behind stream Norhtwest of Moresnet.

Beim K.G. meldet sich im Laufe des Vormittags Oberstlt. Hoffmann, Kdr. Flakgruppe Aachen, Oberst Sperling, Erkundungsstab 9.P.D., Ia 116.P.D.
In den Vormittagsstunden verhielt sich der Feind ruhig. Erst gegen Mittag begann er wieder anzugreifen, und zwar auf der Straße ostw. der Maas nach Norden hauptsächlich mit Infanterie und einigen Panzern, auf der Straße von Aubel nach Norden mit Panzern und Infanterie, auf der Straße von Montzen über Hombourg nach Norden und auf der Straße Eupen – Aachen erreichte er um 14.00 Uhr Eynatten.
In the morninghours the enemy was quite, only in the afternoon he started attacking again namely on the road Eastly of river Maas, mainly with infantry and some tanks; on the road from Aubel to to the North, with tanks and infantry; on the road from Monten via Hombourg to the north; and on the road Eupen-Aachen the enemy reached Eynatten at 14:00

14.45 Uhr:
Meldet Ia 275.I.D., daß Feind ow. Der Maas nach Norden auf Breust angreift mit 1 – 2 Btl. und einzelnen Panzern. Gleichzeitig Artl.Feuer von Westen über die Maas.
Gegenstoß in Kp.Stärke ist liegengeblieben.
14:45 Ia 275 Inf Div reports that enemy attacks to the North to Breust with 1 or 2 battalions and some tanks. At the same time artilleryfire coming from west over river Maas.
15.00 Uhr:
Chef AOK orientiert Chef AOK über Lage und beantragt Änderung der rechten Grenze bei Maastricht, da keine Kräfte zur Verfügung stehen, um den verbreiterten Abschnitt zu besetzen.
1500 Chief AOK reports about situation and requests a change on the right line at Maastricht because their are no units available to occupy the widened section.
16.00 Uhr:
Chef AOK macht Ia dringend, daß der rechte Flügel an der Maas unbedingt festgehalten mußte in der Linie Kanne – Gronsveld.
Alle Teile ow. der Maas müssen dem Gen.Kdo. unterstellt werden.
Ia orientiert Chef AOK über die Lage am linken Flügel.

Ia orientiert Ia 353.I.D. über die Veränderung der linken Korpsgrenze, wonach Bunker 154 noch zum Gen.Kdo LXXXI.A.K. kommt, Bunker 151 zum linken Nachbar.
17:00 Ia informs Ia 353 about the changes on left border of Corps, wereafter Bunker 154 is put under command Gen Kom LXXXI and Bunker 151 to his neigbouring units.
18.00 Uhr:
Wird durch Zivilisten gemeldet, daß Rott vom Feinde besetzt sei und der Eindruck entsteht, daß Feind den Westwall südlich Rott durchbrochen hätte.
Anfragen bei Ia 353.I.D. und angesetzte Spähtrupps stellen fest, daß Rott feindfrei ist, Feind nur westlich Rott am Westwall mit Aufklärung vorgefühlt hat.
18:00 Civilians report that enemy occupied Rott and the impression is that the enemy has breached the Westwall Southern of Rott. Inquiries at 353 Inf div. and a reconmission find out that there is no enemy in Rott. The enemy had only made reconmission to Westwall, western of Rott.
19.00 Uhr:
Ia gibt Ia 275.I.D. Weisung, daß beim Ausweichen die Linie Kanne – Gronsveld unbedingt gehalten und der rechte Flügel stark gemacht werden muß.

Tagesmeldung 116.Pz.Div.:
08.00 Uhr Sehr ruhiger Verlauf der nacht ermöglichte das Beziehen einer Stellung entlang Bahnlinie Hombourg, Moresnes und Groeulebach, hinter der von Vorposten in den Morgenstunden Bereitstellung von Panzern und Mot.Fahrzeugen beobachtet wurden. Gegen Mittag fühlte der Feind mit Jabounterstützung am rechten Flügel des Pz.Gr.Rgt.156 vor und stieß 14.40 Uhr mit Pz. Und starker Art.-Unterstutzung entlang der Straße Hombourg – Volkerich vor. Gleichzeitig trat er mit Pz. über Bahnlinie 4 km ostw. Hombourg zum Angriff an.
Der Feindeinbruch bei r.Nachbar-Div. und der Durchbruch auf eigenem rechten Flügel zwangen gegen 15.30 Uhr zur Zurücknahme der vorderen Linie entlang des Groneulebaches von Moresnes nach NW. Der Feind erzielte Einbrüche bei Gleiberg und Völkerich, gegen die Gegenangriffe im Gange sind. Der linken Flügel entlang des Groneulebaches.
19:00 report of 116 Panz Div.:”at 08:00 because the night was quite we were able to set up a defenceline along railroad Hombourg, Moresnes and Groeulebach, behind this line the guards watched in the early morning the assembly of enemy tanks and other motorised units. At noon the enemy attacked th right wing of Panz Grenadier Regiment 156, supported by fighterattacks; At 1440 the enemy attacked with tanks and heavy artillery support along the road Hombourg-Volkerich. At the same time they attacked by crossing the railroad with tanks 4 km eastern of Hombourg.
The enemy breakthrough at neighbour division to the right and the breakthrough at own right flank forced us to pull back the frontline along the stream Groneule from Moresnes to norhwest. Counterattacks are still going on against the enemy breakthroughs at Gleiberg and Völkerich. Left wing is along the stream “Groneule”
19.25 Uhr:
Macht K.G. den Kdr. 9.P.D. nochmals darauf aufmerksam, daß die SS-Kampfgruppe umgehend
herausgezogen werden muß. General Muller verspricht dieses durchzuführen.
1925 KG points out again to the commander of 9 Panz Div that the SS-battlegroup has to be withdrawn immediately. General Müller promisses to execute this order.

Kündigt Oblt. Liebrecht Heeresgruppe den Besuch des Reichminister Speer um 06.00 Uhr an und bittet um Stellung eines Einweisers und die Entsendung eines Offiziers der 9. oder 116.P.D.
At 03:00 Oberleutnant Liebrecht, Heeresgruppe, announces that Reichminister Speer will visit at 06:00 and askes for a assisten and an deligated officer of 9th or 116 Panz Div.

 

04.45 Uhr:
353.I.D., Lt. Külz, Morgenmeldung:
Feind stieß gegen 20.00 Uhr mit Inf. unbekannter Stärke und einzelnen Panzern zwischen Straße Aachen – Hergenrath und Aachen – Eupen in den Westwall bis zum Brandenberg ( 3 Km n. Hauset) vor und nahm Bunker 161.
Gleichfalls gegen 20.00 Uhr stieß er mit Pz.Spw. und einzelnen Panzern bis zum Westwall (1 km so. Schmidthof ( 5 km ssw. Cornelimünster) vor. Durch Gegenangriff zur Wiedergewinnung Bunker 161 konnte Einbruchstelle eingeengt werden. Angriff wird im Morgengrauen fortgesetzt.
Div.Gef.Stand 13.9. 08.30 Uhr Schevenhütte (7,5 km nw. Zweifall).
04:45 : 353 Inf Div . Lt Külz, morningreport:
Enemy pushed through at 20:00 hrs with infantry - strenght unknown- and some tanks between road Aachen-Hergenrath and Aachen-Eupen into Westwall untill Brandenberg ( 3km North of Hauset)and took Bunker 161.
At same moment at 20:00hrs he pushed through with scoutcars and some tanks untill Westwall (1 km south-east of Schmidthof ( 5 km South-southwest of Cornelimünster) By counterattack to retake Bunker 161 the breached area could be narrowed down. Attack will continu at dawn.
Divisions Headquarter at 13 september 08:30 at Schevenhütte (7,5 km nortwest of Zweifall)
Lw.Feld.Btl.12, Ersztz-Rgt.253 und Lw.Feld.Btl. 8 und 19 Kampfkommandant Aachen zum Einsatz in 1.Stellung unterstellt. Fest.Pak-Abt. 503 und 504 aus Verband der Div. ausgeschieden. Befehlsübergabe an 9.u.16.P.D.

05:00 275 Inf/Div morningreport (oberleutenant Eisent):
Füs. Bat. Retreats to line Margraten-Euverem. One tank is missing, units of 2nd Batallion are holding Northern of Breuse. Of the Gr.Rgt.984. Rgts.-Stab 80 men are in Gasthins, one battalion appears to be surrounded, other units lost or scattered.

06.15 Uhr:
Trifft der Reichminister auf dem Gefechtstand ein und hat mit Kommand. General und dem a der 9.P.D. eine Besprechung über den Einsatz der Panzer-Divisionen.
K.G. trägt ihm die augenblickliche Lage vor und beweist anhand der vorhandenen Unterlagen die geringe Besetzung des Westwalles im Korpsabschnitt mit Artl. und schwerer Pak.

Feind hat mit 1 Mot.-Btl. und 2 Pz.Spw. die HKL. errecht.
Kein Anschluß an linken Nachbarn. Linker Flügel der Div. steht bei Gulpen. 3 Btl. sind in der HKL
eingesetzt. Gestern wurde 1 Btl. eingeschlossen und vernichtet. Bei einem anderen Btl. sind 80 Mann herauskommen, ein 3.Btl. Starke etwa 100 Mann, wird n. Merenland neu zusammengestellt. – eigene vordere Linie.

Enemy has reached the main battle line with 1 motorised battalion and 2 armored scoutcars.
No connection with units on left. Left wing of division is situated at Gulpen.
Three battalions are put in action at main front line . Yesterday one battalion was surrounded and destroyed. 80 man of another battalion got away. A third battalion of about 100 man is newly deployed north of Merenland.

Kdr. beklagt sich, das Lw.Feld-Btl. bei kleinsten Angriffen ihre Stellung verlassen.
Die Unterstellung der Flakuntergruppe stoßt auf Schwierigkeiten, da die Flakuntergruppe glaubt, Befehle der Div. nicht ausführen zu brauchen. So wurde befohlen, die Batterien mit einem Wall zu umgeben, um sie vor feindlichen Beschuß zu schützen. Dieser Befehl wurde nicht befolgt. Erfolg: 1 Battr. Wurde zerschossen. Eine andere Battr. machte am hellen Tage trotz gegenteiligen Befehl Stellungswechsel und wurde ebenfalls vernichtet. Außerdem seine die Zustande in Aachen verheerend. Der Kdr. habe befohlen, daß, soweit Eisenbahn- und Kolonnenraum vorhanden, die Zivilbevölkerung die Stadt verlassen könne, im übrigen aber jedes Verlassen der Stadt ein Verstopfen der Straßen nach sich ziehen würde.

Commander complaints about the Luftwaffe field battalions who leave their positions even at the smallest attacks. The deployment of the Flakgruppe leads to difficulties because they believe they do not have to obey the commands of the Division. For example: they were ordered to dig in the batteries to protect them from enemy fire. This command was not followed. The result: 1 battery was destroyed by enemy fire. An other battary made a change of position in clear daylight, although ordered not to do so, and was also destroyed.
In addition, the conditions in Aachen are devastating. The commander has orderd that as soon as railroad and transportunits are available, the civillians can leave the city. But on the other hand every evacuation of the city would lead to a total block of the streets in the city.

The Division is worried about the observation of the gathering of about 200 enemy armored vehicles in sector Kornelimünster, which force continues to increase.

 

My Great Uncle Robert H Klose served in the 117th of the 30th and he was killed at St Barthélemy on August 7th. I would like to find out more on him if possible. There is conflicting stories on when he arrived in France so any information would be greatly appreciated.

 

Your Great Uncle was in Company A, 1st Battalion They had arrived the night before and went into positions vacated by the 1st Division along the northeast-east-southeast of the village. A Company was on the left and C Company on the right, with B Company in reserve in the village itself. Both Companies on the line were supported by heavy machine guns of D Company. A Company was supposed to tie in with elements of the 35th Division on the extreme left, but nobody could find them. As a consequence, elements of B company were called forward to set up a 57mm and some heavy machine guns even further left to create a strong point at a place called Bois-du-Parc. As all of this was happening just before and at dark, the Luftwaffe began strafing the area. More 57mm guns were being brought in, and later that night 3 inch towed anti-tank guns were also brought in, but in the dark most of these big guns were badly positioned.

The phone wires were cut by all the tracked vehicles as the Divisions pulled in and out, so the only comms were by radio and were very sketchy - it's a hilly area and a dense fog developed after dark making the atmospherics very poor. The line was basically overlooking a shallow river valley and the HQ units were in hilly areas to the rear. This night and morning fog was actually addressed in the German battle plan because the area was known for this at the time of year, and would prevent the US/Brit fighter bombers from operating during much of the day.

Terrified civilians began coming through the line after dark warning that the Germans were coming. The soldiers in A and C could actually see big fires across the valley and hear the Germans singing. They began receiving intermittent artillery fire about 2300. Much of this was direct fire coming across the valley - a flash and then almost simultaneous detonations in the line - Panzers or Stugs. At midnight they began getting probes all along the line. They didn't know it then, but this was the 1st Waffen SS (Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler) supported by elements of other German divisions. The 2nd Waffen SS (Das Reich) was targeting the right side of the line at Mortain.

A German 1st SS recon column (headed by Gustav Knittel who was later to be charged with war crimes for the massacre of civilians at Stavelot) hit the B Company strong point at Bois-du-Parc at 0100 and overran it, continuing west until they hit the 119th IR which just happened to be in reserve some miles along the road they followed (info provided by ww2f member Timo Worst and verified by 30th Division records). Another armored force hit Company A at La Sablonie and were repulsed. Small probes hit every point of the line looking for weak spots.

At dawn, between 0600 and 0700, the full attack developed in thick fog, now supported by Panzer IV and V's and halftracks. Company A's strongpoint/roadblock at La Sablonie was overrun this time. Another big fight began at Company C's roadblock just to the south. This strongpoint held.

The German drive penetrated at several points along the line but the bulk of the men held in their foxholes and came up after the panzers had passed to open up on the German troopers supporting them. All of the towed 3 inch guns were knocked out by 0700 and the panzers penetrated right into Saint Barthelemy forcing the Battalion OP to abandon their position and set up a new line to the west of the village with the remaining elements of Companies B and D.
Runners finally contacted A and C Companies by 0900 with orders to pull back to the new line.

By 0900 A company had only 13 (or 12 depending on the source) men still on the line, while C had 33 men still alive. They had held until ordered to withdraw.

The new line on a hill west of St. B. consisted of the remains of Companies B and D on the left, with every cook, clerk and staff officer in the battalion assigned as riflemen, bolstered by the 45 or so survivors of Companies A and C, on the right. The new line held against another heavy attack in the early afternoon. They were in an excellent position above the village, and the Germans were forced to crowd their armor through the narrow streets with heavy 81mm mortar fire raining down on them. They held there for several days against attacks which grew weaker each time, supported by heavier artillery as neighboring divisions tied into the fight, and RAF Typhoons and US Jugs that were able to make runs in the clear afternoons.

That is the fight your Great Uncle died in. I hope this information helps.

 

I may have grid coordinates somewhere, but most of my stuff is still boxed up. A Company was wrapped right around the north and east edge of St. B., less than one kilometer from the edge of the village with its central strong point (La Sablonie) on what is now D5 Rue Claude de Chappe/Route le Rocher. I believe La Sablonie is a farm located there.
The B Company gun and strong point to the north was out Route D79, the road to La Tournerie. I'm not sure how far, but the A Company line tied in with that gun from the fields to the south or southeast
C Company was centered (the strongpoint) at the road junction of Rue du Douet and Le champ Fontaine with its line tying into A Company in the fields to the north and another company from the 2nd battalion to the SW.

You can find most of these places on Google Earth, but some place names are farms (La Sablonie, etc.) which are not named. Mr. Klose would have died in that N/NE/E semi-circle within 1000 yards of the village itself.

I made an error above. The Division to the north (whose line could not be located) on that opening day was the 39th, not the 35th who were tied in at the southern end of the line with the 120th Division.

 

Oops, no. It was the 39th Infantry Regiment of the 9th ID. As the battle progressed, the 4th ID came in between the 30th and 9th to shorten the line. Further north was the 28th and 29th, though I'm not sure at what point they came in or who was actually on the line when the attack began. I suspect it was the 29th because they were also badly depleted at Saint Lo and the divisions relegated to this "quiet" area were there to refit after the Saint LO bloodbath.

 

Thanks Kodiakbear for the info. Is there anyway to know when Mr Klose joined the 30th in Europe? Some family members said he was with them right away and some say he was a replacement.
