    The roster at the link below shows him with the Combat Infantry Badge which would indicate he was with them from the beginning. It takes time to earn the CIB.

    I have pictures of him from boot camp and a picture of him holding my dad before he shipped out.

    What does DuB-m mean in awards list... I know PH is Purple Heart.

    Distinguished Unit Badge. That award award was given to 'Curlew' (1st Battalion, 117th IR, 30th ID) for that heroic stand at Mortain. They earned another at the Siegfried line and suffered a similar casualty rate in earning it.

    Ia – Ia Armee:
    Rest Lds.Btl.547 (1 Schtz.Zug, 1 schw. Kp mit 2 3,7cm Pak 3 mittlere Granatwerfer, 4 s.M.G. ) wird dem Gen.Kdo. am 15.(. im E-Transport nach Düren zugeführt.
    Ia Armee schlägt vor, Reste des Btls. aufzuteilen und Stab für Ordnungsaufgaben zu verwenden.
    1 Lds.Pi.Kp. und 1 Lds.Bau.Kp. durch Oberst Aßmann zugeführt und vereinnahmt und 353.I.D. Unterstellt.
    353.I.D. bereitet Rückhaltstellung mit Arbeitsdienst, Zivilisten usw. im Zuge Abschnitt Jülich – Düren vor.
    00:55 hrs:
    Ia to Ia Armee
    Remnants of Lds.Btl.547 (1 Schtz.Zug, 1 schw. Kp mit 2 3,7cm Pak 3 mittlere Granatwerfer, 4 s.M.G. ) is repositioned to Gen.Kdo. at 15th in E-Transport to Düren. Ia Armee suggest to split up rest of the battalion and deploy the staff for order tasks.
    1 Lds.Pi.Kp. und 1 Lds.Bau.Kp. ordered by Oberst Aßmann to deploye under command of 353.Inf .Div.
    353 inf.div prepares a supportposition with Arbeidsdienst, civilians etc. at outskirts of sector Jülich-Düren

    Das Zurückweichen von Teilen des Lds.Btls. 453, das M.G.Btl.34 ist zurückführen auf die Ansicht des Kdrs. Des Lds.Btls., daß nach seiner Ansicht auf den wirklichen Westwall hinter Aachen nach erfolgtem Feinddurchbruch zurückgegangen werden sollte.Die anderen Teile haben sich diesem Zurückgehen angeschlossen.
    Die Div. hatte lediglich Befehl gegeben, daß alle herausgeschossenen Teile durch dahinter stehende eigene Teile aufgefangen werden sollten.

    The retreat of units of Lds.Btls. 453, M.G.Btl.34 is lead back to the judgement of commander of Lds Battl, that to his opinion, when the enemy succesfully breaks through, a fall back should be made to the real Westwall behind Aachen. Other units have joint this retreat. The Division had only issued the order that all scattered units should be gathered by their own units.

    That salute is for all the wonderful Dutch people who remember the allied soldiers that fought and died across western Europe. Most of them are gone now, but be assured that their children and grandchildren are grateful that they are remembered.

    Lageschilderung durch Kdr. 9.P.D.
    Einbruch Mausbach bereinigt bis auf 2 Bunker, um die Kampf noch im Gange.
    Gegenstoß auf Vicht und auf Zweifall angesetzt. Erfolgsmeldung steht noch aus.
    07:40hrs
    Situation report by Commander 9 Panz. Div:
    Breakthrough at Mausbach cleared except for 2 bunkers were fighting still is going on
    Counterattack at Vicht and Zweifall started, report about outcome not available yet.
    08.40 Uhr:
    Chef – Ia 116.Pz.Div.:
    Pz.A.A. von starkem Inf.-und Panzerfeind auf die Bahnlinie, die von Burdscheit nach Nordosten führt, zurückgedrängt. Dort bereits aufgefangene Teile M.G. Btl. Eingesetzt. Vordere Linie verläuft am Bahndamm. Div.Kdr. ist zur Klärung der Lage nach vorne gefahren.
    08:40 Chief - Ia 116th Panz Div:
    Panzer Abwehr Abteilung (Antitank units) pushed back by strong enemy infantry and tanks to Railroad which runs from Burdscheit to North East. Overthere already gathered units of Mg Battalions put into action. Frontline is Railroad. Division commander went up there to find out about situation.
    08.45 Uhr:
    Auf Befehl Gen.Kdo. soll Autobahnbrücke bei Lughem gesprengt werden. Brücke ist zugleich als LS-Bunker für die Zivilbevölkerung ausgebaut. 9.P.D. bittet um Entscheidung, ob trotzdem gesprengt werden soll.
    8:45:
    At order of General Command the bridge over highway at Lughem has to be blown up. Bridge has also function as anti-airraid shelter for civilians.
    9th Panz Div. requests to evaluate if the bridge should be blown up despite this.
    09.15 Uhr:
    Ia 116.P.D. – O 1:
    08.15 Uhr 25 Panzer mit zahlreichen MTW auf Straße Brand nach Eilendorf, drehen anscheinend auf Straße nach Stolberg ab.
    Gleichzeitig starker Nebelbeschuß auf Westwall beiderseits der Straße nach Stolberg, außerdem –
    anscheinend gleichzeitig – Angriff auf eigene Sicherungen bei Eilendorf. Starkes Gewehr- und MG-Feuer hörbar. Aufklärung fand Eilendorf 08.00 Uhr feindfrei.

    Ia 116th Panz. Div. to O 1
    8:15 : 25 tanks with many trooptransportcarriers on the road from Brand to Eilendorf, which are heading obviously to the road to Stolberg. At the same moment heavy smoke laid at Westwall on both sides of road to Stolberg.and besides that, also at the same moment attack at our strongpoints at Eilenberg. We can hear heavy gun and machingunfire. Recon found Eilenberg at 08:00 hrs free of enemy.
    09.25 Uhr:
    Chef – 9.P.D.:
    Lageorientierung.
    9.P.D. hat Auftrag, mit gepanzerter Gruppe Feind anzugreifen und ihn hinter den Westwallriegel
    zurückzuwerfen. Höchste Eile geboten.

    Statusreport: 9th Panz Div. is ordered to attack enemy with armored units and push him back behind Westwall with haste !
    10.05 Uhr:
    49.I.D. – O 5:
    Aufklärung hat Negertruppen und einige Panzer in Holset festgestellt. Im übrigen Ruhe im Abschnitt.
    10:05 :
    49th Inf Div.- O 5:
    Reconmission has detected Negrotroops and some Tanks in Holset.
    Besides this all quite in this sector.
