Actually, the Oka rocket bomb while a suicide weapon, was extremely effective once launched. in the few cases where the Japanese were able to position the carrier aircraft and launch these they devastated the ships they attacked. For their time they were essentially the equivalent of a human guided SSM.
The USN really had no means to stop them after launch. Their speed was too great for fire control resolutions by existing equipment, their size was small and, they were quite fast. They also had a large enough warhead that against virtually any target they were going to do crippling or near crippling damage to it.

I know that. I was just stating that it was a stupid concept. Although effective they were launched from "Betty" bombers. In most cases they didnt even reach there targets. Kindof like the Luftwaffe's Mistel project.

Well, it's slightly preferable to spitting at a panzer if you have nothing else to hand, I guess?

That Japanese AT lance was even worse than the British Grenade. You actually had a decent chance of surviving the use of the British weapon if you were successful.

I notice two things in this thread.

First, a lot of people seem to equate "obsolete" and "stupid".

Second, it seems everone has overlooked what to my view is obviously the stupidest weapon of WW2... a weapon that was both ineffective in itself, and totally stymied development of another, one which could arguably have altered the course of the war.

The stupidest weapon of WW2? The Me-262.... bomber.

LOL...It could have a payload of 500kg and that's enough and is faster than any other fighter in that time...I would call the me-163 more stupid for in battle use it was only good as an interceptor.

I think you have to becareful when called Early Jet Rocket aircraft stupid weapons or obsolete. Why? Because what ended up happening with that technology? Piston based planes are no longer in regular active service, but instead have all been replaced by Jet Rocket planes. Now although the technology did have its obvious flaws and problems, the idea was great which that lone should discontinue inthe stupid weapon catagory. Its the whole What IF. What if they got it to fully work, and what if it did everything they hoped it could?

I know the idea was great just like the v1 and v2 only problem is they weren't effective by then. And thanks to Hitler we could use their knowledge about the rockets to use it for our own use.

They were given it to use as a demolition device, not an anti-tank weapon.

And for that kind of jobs the No 74 is very effective if you can stick it against a wall/door for a good hole.:p

Could it put that 500kg on target? All the accounts I've seen say no...

Flip-side: How many Forts, Lancs, and Liberators were able to drop their payloads somewhere in the vicinity of the target with relatively little trouble because the Luftwaffe wasn't flying the interceptor that totally outperformed ALL available escorts?
