I've been reading through the various News "reports" about the bombing in Boston and other items of interest and noticed that each have their own slant. Another thing I noticed is the complete lack of any editorial oversight; This is a small example of "How can you believe any of it?" headline: $300 scholarship program in China to build U.S.-China understanding (first paragraph) announced Sunday the creation of a $300 billion elite scholarship program for study in China (next paragraph) The $300 billion gift represents the largest charitable effort in China's history. Schwarzman donated $100 million of his own money, and the other $200 million will be raised from private donors. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-3460_162-57580617/$300-scholarship-program-in-china-to-build-us-china-understanding/
Evidently the spell check often used by editors only applied to spelling and not numerical analysis. Perhaps they will need a whole new algorithm to amount-check their figures when they must have math in headlines agree with stories. See, isn't it good when they replace people with machines, and continue to remain ignorant? I can't find fault, I am equally incompetent in most cases when using my own computer but yes I am not making any money while making my mistakes. I have noticed internet headlines tend to have more mistakes when comparing to newspapers........perhaps so much is done on computers and there is a heavy reliance on spell check and it often finds ways of falling short. If they come up with 300 billion for that, do you think they could tie a small percentage of that aimed at boosting educational results in the lower grades so some of our own U.S.students could eventually aim towards finishing high school too? It is good we have lofty goals, however we need to find new approaches at basics too, as our graduating percentages are pretty bad in most communities.
Apparently, Fox news closed captions identified Zooey Deschanel as the Boston bomber. Probably one of those spell-check "did you mean?" things when they typed in Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Well if the FBI were to send a tactical team to take her out, I don't think I would loose too much sleep over it. Can't stand her brand of comedy.
I think the thing that gets me the most is I spent the better part of yesterday wasting my time switching back and forth between MSNBC, Fox, NBC, ABC, CNN and maybe a couple others. (Have I mentioned lately it's still snowing here?) Anyway, comparing the differences was a lesson in the finer Art of - pander to a demographic & get those ratings! A Democrat Congressman crying about they had to have a connection to a larger group to be able to afford all the weapons. I have my doubts it would have amounted to more than a few hundred dollars. A pundit proclaiming they HAD to have training to be able make, and know how to throw, homemade bombs out of a moving car????? New reporting states they may never be able to question the suspect due to a neck wound and being shot in the tongue - he can't respond? Give the asswipe a crayon and paper. Guess I'm getting to be too cynical but I've beginning to not put much stock in anything I read anymore.
With the Internet, you don't need to rely on the media any more. You still have to filter that information according to your own common sense, but at least you have a Chinese menu of sources instead of a media that plays follow-the-leader with whatever nonsense some nameless source spouts out.
I don't watch any of that crap they dish out on TV. I usually end up wanting to throw objects at the screen. The talking heads, pseudo-reporters and reporterettes babble and babble, trying to fill up time and never really saying much of anything substantial. They really irritate me when they try to make themselves out to be the new-found authority on the given subject, when the truth of the matter is that they don't know their butt from a hole in the ground.
Guess I'm getting to be too cynical but I've beginning to not put much stock in anything I read anymore. About time too....Apart from what we on here say though Biak....We are of course the exception...
Oh I'd never doubt the veracity of the written words of the rogues within the confines of our pages. Like KB said above we have access to multiple web sites to check the truthyness (bushism), of the diatribe the talking heads espouse. Just happened again on CNN - guy sitting outside, beside the street, interviewing various "Experts". He's wearing what appears to be a winter jacket (full discloser-just conjecture on my part) and gloves that would make Sasquatch proud. If the idiot is cold and it's hard to talk over the traffic noise Go Back Inside! The main thing I am most happy about is there is nothing else going on in the World and presumably we have World Peace, all our Energy concerns have been rectified, Disease & Illness have been eradicated, every deployed Military service member is Home; That thing in West Texas is old news and the flooding in the Midwest was just a Seasonal bump; .............. ...............
Wish I was a talking head. Haven't made it up that far on the body. ..A few more incarnations and I should be at least shoulder high.
So Poppy? Are we to assume you've been talking out your a** ? Makes as much if not more sense than those "talking Heads" on the tv
Let's all salute London! http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/photos-from-the-london-marathon-showing-support-for-bosto
I will salute London! Great to hear the support the runners showed for Boston. Very nice. A little bit different than the disgust for the incorrect reporting, but in the same vein, I suppose. I turned off the coverage early, shortly after the bombing and just checked in periodically to get what facts I could root out of the perpetual blather, when I heard a woman reporter talking about poor little Martin Richard. Not surprised but still sickened, she was reporting from the Richard's street and interviewing the neighbors and friends about that precious boy and she reported talking to his school mate and asking her how she felt about him getting killed. Seriously, do you need to ask to know what a poor little 8-year-old girl thinks about her classmate getting killed in a bombing just to get a dramatic sound byte? Do you really need to dig that hard and in such a tasteless manner? Decided it was time to turn off.
I feel sorry for all affected...And I'm not the biggest police lover...But the MIT officer killed...He never stood a chance.
I would like to know where the # 8 posting came from as the logo it carries is not the source and we are dealing with "distrust" issues with this thread.
I won't speak for KB...but why not..Yes I will....Surely he is just posting ironically a report by said media which in fact highlights their errors and mistakes etc...Not out of line with the rest of the thread...I don't read anything else into it Victor. As an aside...and as in Poppy's recent Canadian threat thread...The press conference there was quite impressive, with members of the press corps...asking relevant and respectul in tone...but to the point...questions.
What Urgh said... The picture is from The Onion, making fun of CNN's gaffes during the last week. I thought it was strange enough that everyone would see it was just a joke. The Onion is a comedy site. http://www.theonion.com/articles/cnn-releases-photos-of-3-obese-mexican-women-suspe,32112/
I would have made no comment if the onion had been cited....but it does give you a 3 in one hit......making fun of obese, making fun of females, making fun of Hispanics.....guess you could call it shotgun humor.
