View attachment 19243 Hello, Can anyone help me identify the origin of these buttons? (German or American) They were found with these munitions near places where Germans and Americans fought (Valley Schwartzbach, Alsace, January 1945) Thank you very much. Eric
Thank you for the respons. A bag of ration was also found nearby, but in very poor shape. You can still read the word "Coffee". The photo has not been taken. But it looks like this : View attachment 19245 Eric
I believe what you have is several buttons from the wool tunics of the German Soldier, check to make sure though, on the side of the button, the general manner in which they were manufactured would have a flat spot, the American buttins would not have such a flat spot, also in WW2 Germany used a drilling process on their buttons that was not uniform, so the thread holes were often out of aliegnment, and crooked, and several buttons were drilled at the same time, or towards the end of the war, the buttons themselves were cast. -CSM Thomas BirdyMcKee (ret.)
The four hole button is a German trousers type button. It can be seen on Deutsche soldaten by Augustin Saliz , page 31 and 36. They are usually metal or even pressed cellulose (dyed or not) or resin (see suspender buttons) . Such buttons were also used inside the Feldbluse as paste buttons (page 34) . The two hole button was used on the Wendbarer Winter Anzug (reversible parka). You have the Felgrau version but they go in white too.( page 82)
Looks like cloth belted .30 Cal to me. I think all German stuff was disentegrating link. BNut, I was wrong about the buttons and I could be wrong about this as well.
Hi, I found the origin of the buttons. They are American as you can see in the picture : View attachment 19257 Eric
