    Nah, we're talking helmets.
That lid says 'Tommy Atkins' whether it's a Canuck, Septic, Kiwi, Aussie or Indian wearing it.

Guess it had to be that way because of Americans crossing over the pond and getting involved .

Serious7, the helmet you posted about does look somewhat like a WW1-WW2 German Stahlhelm. The Germans made a careful study of head wounds in WW1 and carefully designed a helmet of good ballistic shape as well as being made of stronger nickel-steel alloy. It was far superior in every way to what the allies were putting on their heads in that war..

The US developed a good helmet between the wars but some early troops, especially in the Pacific worn old WW1 Brodie style helmets. In the post WW2 era the US , as has every other industrial nation , has done research into better head gear and liked the Germans looked at shape and materials. The US helmet you posted is one of many variants produced, it has the "eyelid" like the Stahlhelm, is black and the rear drops down to protect the lower skull. It is not in common use. Most troops now wear one without the eye visor and color is dependent on environment .

Von Poop's illustration shows the most common US version commonly used now, made of Kevlar. Ironically modern day German troops wear a near identical helmet.

When you see the German WW2 helmet you associate it with Nazis. I associate it , and I think most here do as well, with the Wehrmacht, the German Army.

A well equipped German soldier is not ugly to me, WW2 pictures seem to show then as tough, battle tested and frequently handsome men, just like the Allies . They are frequently dirty and weary from combat but that is not ugly.
Their helmet itself is is a forerunner in design, certainly iconic and there is where the trouble comes. National Socialism, the Nazis and their demented leader are very indeed represent mankind at his ugliest.

The helmet can be seem as symbolic of that aspect of WW2 or it can be seen as symbolic of the German Army as regular soldiers. To some they are the same but to students of the era that are not necessarily so. I suspect combat soldiers on both sides just wanted the war to end and go home as soon as casualties mounted.

To me the diabolical group, I hesitate to call them human, that conceived the Holocaust deserve eternal scorn but the good Doctor who studied head wounds in WW1 and scientist that evolved the stahlhelm to protect the heads of young men were very human.

This forum has great humor, is very tolerant, but takes the study of WW2 seriously and things need to be plausible and proven to really be accepted. Read many of the existing forums, here, and it will present a feel for the place. I believe all sides are treated objectively here, well, except for climate change and politics !!! LOL

I clearly agree with everybody safety but i always felt that the American war fighter should have his own identity and style.

The Waffen SS introduced the camo field uniform. Should our troops also not wear camo?

    Wait, the Northrop B-2?

You mean the same company that produced the...

    Northrop N-1M

    Northrop YB-35

    and the Northrop YB-49

The Company that was under the helm of Jack Northrop, who had been working on the flying wing design as long as the Horten Brothers.

All Northrop was interested in was how the Horten flying wing was effected by radar.

Actually it was the other way around. The Massachusetts State Troopers uniform was admired and copied by the Nazis.

Speaking of the dangers of TV history, there was no such thing as a 'neo nazi' during the war.

I stand corrected, in the segment they are showing the German Americans and German Nationals in the camps .. I had it mix up with the History of the Neo-Nazis from another program..

By the way is there a danger for watching the military channel..?

"Are you seriously suggesting changing the design of a helmet solely on the grounds that it looks too "nazi"?"

I think the US Army can look better than that..

Sure it could look better but any better look would actually mean less protection meaning more body bag's. Are you willing to trade 1,000 young American's for the sake of a more pleasing to the eye helmet?

The biggest problem is that they get so many things incorrect.
