And I apologise to our UK colleagues if any have taken umbrage in my banter. I value people even if they shake a haggis & whiskey, a crumpet & tea, or the colonial beer & shrimp on a Barbie at me. America's kind of too big to define what they'd shake at me... and it's sort there already waiting for when you step off the airplane, no matter where you are...

I tossed a caber once, though I didn't actually toss it so much as trip over it, spraining my wrist and tearing some new pants. It was just laying there in the woods inviting anybody to trip over it. Can I be Scottish? I also once dated a Scottish girl, but she wasn't actually Scottish, she was Polish and they had changed their name to McCarthy because nobody could pronounce Mneerriinnhjjzliski or whatever it was when grandpa got off the boat. Still, I think it should count.

 

We had a Polish-surnamed Captain , noone could pronounce it so he became Captain ''Three Zeds''.

 

It was 'Limey', but not directly from the fruit, lime. It was from lime juice, because that was given to Britsh sailors to drink, as a precaution against scurvy, to which they were prone as a result of the diet enforced by long voyages without easy means of preserving food.

A chap at work was convinced we're called Limeys because when the GIs got off the troopships at Liverpool docks they got on the train at Lime Street Station .
I had to tell him he was wrong, poor chap, he looked so deflated.

One of my all time favorite history books is The Steel Bonnets goes into some of that complexity in a relativly small area. A fasinating and easy read. Wish the author had written more history books in addition to his fiction.

Britain was refered to here as "the old country" - Am I missing something or did the USSR cease to exist circa 1991? They are Russians living in Russia these days...or am I going mad?

To say I'm an Englishman, to say I'm British, Igirisu'll be the key word in both those statements; but not for saying I'm a Scotsman.
