Slavery Compensation- the latest cause celeesbre

Shouldn't be surprised that this is being brought by the same British firm which won compensation for Mau-Mau held prisoner by the British in the '50s, but this is (IMHO) ridiculous.
Not one mention of the Muslim slave traders who trekked into the African interior to pick up slaves, often willingly sold into slavery by their own chiefs, oh no it was The Big Bad West that invented the entire concept from start to finish. Or the modern slave trade they're trying so hard to pretend doesn't exist-
"More than 150 years after Europe abolished slavery, the Caribbean is preparing to sue Britain for its part in the wholesale trade of human beings.
A coalition of Caribbean leaders will meet today in St. Vincent to discuss a landmark legal claim for reparations - that could run into the hundreds of billions of pounds - for a legacy that many say still lingers across the palm-fringed archipelago.
Caricom, a group of 12 former British colonies together with the former French colony Haiti and the Dutch-held Suriname, believes Europe should pay for a range of issues spawned by slavery, from poverty and illiteracy to ill health.
But is says the UK in particular should pay the most even though it was the first to abolish slavery in 1833.




The case has been prepared by a British law firm that recently won almost £20 million compensation for hundreds of Kenyans tortured by the British colonial government during the Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s.



Today's claim, which also targets Spain, Portugal, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, comes at a pertinent time for the issue of slavery - just a week after Steve McQueen's epic 12 Years A Slave won the Oscar for Best Picture in Los Angeles.
'Over ten million Africans were stolen from their homes and forcefully transported to the Caribbean as the enslaved chattels and property of Europeans,' the claim says. 'The transatlantic slave trade is the largest forced migration in human history and has no parallel in terms of man's inhumanity to man.'
It continues: 'This trade in enchained bodies was a highly successful commercial business for the nations of Europe.
'The lives of millions of men, women and children were destroyed in the search of profit. Over ten million Africans were imported into the Caribbean during the 400 years of slavery.
'At the end of slavery in the late 19th century, less than two million remained. The chronic health condition of Caribbean blacks constitutes the greatest financial risk to sustainability in the region.'
Caricom has not specified how much money they are seeking but senior officials have pointed out that Britain paid slave owners £20 million when it abolished slavery in 1834. That sum would be the equivalent of £200 billion today."

A crime committed by people who are now dead...against people who are now dead.

Grow a pair and look after yourselves. This is offensive to anybody with intelligence.

 

If there were some former slaves still alive I could see it. However their decendents owe their verry existance to the slave trade. It's sort of like asking for compensation for being born ...

When I start filling mass graves, or transatlantic shipping of my captives; call me, & we can maybe chat about apologies & compensation.

My mums family is currently in talks with solicitors for both an apology and compensation for the loss of grazing and therefor the future of her family who were in effect expelled to India during the Highland Clearances. Bloody English.

Enslave a bunch of people and maybe after 150 years someone could sue your descendants .... :headbash: :hypnotize: Ever heard of prescription ?

 

I would not lose much sleep over it. So much time passed away that only thing those descendants of slaves can get would be a public apology from Her Majesty's Goverment. Back then slavery was a legit economic business , everyone engaged it without any overthinking and that was before universal declation about rights of men or abolition movement. No one could concieve it was wrong morally to enslave people or skin color does not make them sub humans. Today we know better. After French Revolution First French Republic abolished slavery , only it was reintroduced back by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800. (Haiti won its independence with a slave rebellion in 1802. Even Boney couldn't make them bow before him despite sending an army to invade and colonize Haiti , St Dominique and Martinique ) British forbidden entire slave trade and slave based business making at their territories in 1807 and abolished entire slavery notion in 1833. Mau Mau rebellion was different. It occured during decolonization era when everyone supposed to be much more enlightened and people victims etc are still around. It was a much familiar time.

 

I think it outrageous ......that Gordon keeps posting stories from The Daily Mail.

I dont see this being a win in court though I do see the parts of the EU putting togethor a fund to help the economy there or forgive debts.

 

Wander when all the people displaced due to "ethnic cleansing" after WW2 will start suing ? or the victims of Stalin's "relocations" ? And I may be able to come up with some even more recent examples if I try, some things are better left alone.
