If you were a movie director, and were making a WWII film, what would it be about and why?

6 were electrocuted, the two who turned the entire plan in to the FBI received prison terms(later commuted).

And yes, it would have to be a comedy

I'd do something like "Fighter Squadron" only with extreme realism in sets, plot, dialog and detail in the mundane events from revile to mess to briefing, preflight check list, even maintenance and bore sighting...etc. This would be a guy flick, no love story, no personality conflicts, just a straight up ground attack mission day including the debriefing, dinner mess, writing home and taps. I'd want the movie's undercurrent to illustrate the complexity of putting airframes onto their targets, the concern and work of the ground crews and the everyday bravery of the generation that kept us free.

 

I had read and reviewed a good book that I thought would make a grand mini-series. (see Back from the Deep in Book reviews) In it the brand new US sub Squalus attempts her first test dive and tragedy strikes as the aft section floods sinking the ship and trapping some of the crew forward. Her sister sub, Sculpin, is the first to find her and help with the rescue of the trapped crew. Later raises and renamed Sailfin, she eventually joins her sister in the Philippines just before the war. Both ships work the same areas until one is sunk with part of her crew captured. The surviving sister later torpedo's the Hellship (actually a light carrier) transporting the survivor's to japan! After the war both ships crews hold joint veterans events.

It sounds pure Hollywood but it actually happened. Bonus since most events take place on subs of the same class it would be fairly cheap to film.

 

As to African war movies, I had nearly forgotten The English Patient. I hated it.

 

That is actually not a bad idea now that you mention A-58 :eyebrows:

 

Well I am sure I would make a movie from the Burma TO - especially the episode with the crocodiles in some swamp near an "island" (name forgotten) where were terrible battles. But this would be than almost a horror movie, cause the crocodiles would eat the dead and wounded

1.Kursk battle as it is seen now. 2. Rommel and Alamein 3. The German top officers in jail before Nuremberg trials, and perhaps the later court hearings about doctors etc. I mean there are several interesting details to people like me and some people here. Did you know that the uniforms and clothes worn by the top staff like Göring etc were given to them just before the court hearings. Otheiwise they wore the jail clothing. After the court they changed back to jail clothing.

 

I'm sorry to hear that. I still think it as one of the best films I've ever seen...

i am convinced we are on the edge of digital technology and if used correctly would allow weapons to be correctly portrayed and not just special effects. I see pretty well done digital imagines of fighters but they do not understand flight characteristics and show them properly. But with better techniques a really authentic WW2 film could be made. As for subjects I would find
Malta interesting. Digital imagery is very close and at the speed of development happening now it will not be long.

Karajale, I too thought the English Patient one of the better films I have seen. I thought of it as a story set in war times and not necessarily a war film, but a fine film to me.
For war films I am partial to Das Boot and Band of Brothers and less I forget ,Stalingrad.

 

No love or humanitarian angle. No actors/characters.
Just the facts, man. A computer rendering of important battle weapons in action.
Want to see the history and evolution of different weapons being deployed, their effects on tanks, bunkers, planes, trains.
Basically a Janes Defense Weapons from A to Z.

 

How about a fully animated CGI war filem? (Sorry just channelled a Queenslander)

The characters could even look like the men involved...im thinking something like "Commando" illustrated books brought to life...?
Or just five minute cgi films to give the audience an idea of that little story...
