"Charles Simeons, who has died aged 92, reinvented himself as an international expert on pollution control after four energetic years as Conservative MP for Luton. In Parliament during Edward Heath’s premiership, he concentrated on local issues, wearing a locally made straw boater to Anthony Barber’s Budgets.
He was robust on law and order, calling for muggers — and dumpers of toxic waste — to be put in the stocks. he also vocally opposed enforced comprehensive education. But he was otherwise on the Left of the party, backing Heath on Common Market membership and earning the censure of the Monday Club.
Charles Fitzmaurice Creighton Simeons was born in London on September 22 1921, the son of Charles and Vera Simeons. He was educated at Oundle and Queens’ College, Cambridge, where he boxed and won an athletics Blue. He joined the 52nd Field Regiment Royal Artillery, serving with the 8th Indian Division in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy, then at HQ North-East Africa Command, before demobilisation as a major in 1946."
