I have been taking an interest on the women during WWII. Nurses Corp, factory workers, civilian support, ladies of propaganda, and the like. Does anyone here have family photos of their women helping out during the war? I would love to see some and hear any back story on them. (Please no Google search and post, I can do that myself, and have). Here is my Mammal. This was taken at a dance put on for the local boys heading off to war. Mammal also told me about her garden that she kept so that there would be more food available.
Will have to see if I can find a picture of my Mom (navy).....see if my sister has one. BTW...I tip my hat and, bow and salute you sir. THIS is a fantastic idea for a thread.! I have not been around here long enough to know if it has been done before.....but it is Way Past Due. Have you ever noticed how thin and attractive all the young women were circa 1945.? Your Mother for example.....there are a lot of girls in High School (today) that wished they looked as well (not that I'm checking out your Mom ).
Nice idea, andrwoo. I think I have a photo of my mother from during the war. If not, I have her wedding picture from 1946. Incidentally, she's still alive and feisty as ever at 90.
. My mom when she was 11 years old in 1941 with her uncle George in NY. He was about to leave for Schofield Barracks in Hawaii and was there during the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec 7. She she is 86 now and lives about ten miles from where this picture was taken.
This is nice. She looks so happy to be with her uncle, wearing his hat. I touched it up some. Not a great scan so not much else I can do. Nice family picture. Thumbnail
Yes, exactly what I was hoping to see. Did she say how long she had that job? Was she working on a line? Was the camera the only thing she installed or was there other things. You should try and get a high quality scan of those pictures. Glued in those pages like that will keep damaging the pictures over time. Tell her happy birthday and thanks for her hard work!!!
Great idea. My grandparents were too old to take part in the war, but perhaps I can find a couple of photos of my further family who were nurses in WW2.
Thanks. Very nice of you to do that. Its such a peaceful scene on the eve of our entry into the war. My great uncle George was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and was looking forward to the 50th reunion but he didn't quite make it, unfortunately. All of his brothers were WWII vets who survived the war as did my father and his brother. One of my great uncles was a POW.
She is a veteran and served in the RCAF and was an a camera woman, once she installed the camera, she flew and took pictures, then uninstalled the camera and developed the film. KTK
I just saw a video about the WASPS. I had no idea. Paul Tibbets had them fly the B-29.....to show the Men Pilots that the plane was safe. That must have been humbling.........
My maternal grandmother, my mother and her younger sister in 1945. My grandmother made this photo to send to my grandfather while he was training in Mississippi. View attachment 22083
I imagine him carrying the photo with him the whole time. Sometimes I don't think about the guys having kids when they got called out. I suppose it is because all the ones in my family either didn't get married until they came home or didn't have kids till they got home. My grand Uncle died in Normandy. I touched up your photo a bit. Color fix and spots. Nice picture. Do you know what their hair and eye colors where? This looks like a good picture to colorize. Thumbnail:
I went ahead and played around with the coloring. Let me know if you like it, or want any colors changed. At this point I can change colors real easy. Thumbnail:
