The whine of an incoming mortar shell filled the air as Ken Brown tried to catch a few winks of sleep — as impossible as that may have seemed while battle raged on Iwo Jima.
Brown had trained ears, having dodged mortar fire along the beach countless times. He could tell this round would land nearby — and didn't have much time to react.
"When mortar shells came in," the World War II Marine said, "that is when it was most frightening."

Please read more of my story on this interesting WWII Marine from St. George, Utah. A brave men who has wonderful recollection of his time on Iwo Jima. As if he could possibly forget.

many, congested targets for the Japanese....yes, a ''defender's dream'....a number of different weapons firing at the Marines...a whole different world for humans....defenders and attackers ...both trying to kill ! ???....environment: deadly, with swarms of rounds of many calibers buzzing around....weather: arty shells today, and into next week...will be a few sprinklings of mortar strikes to go with that.....soil:infested with fanatical, poisonous Japanese bugs that will kill in 1 bite....o, very deadly, like a whole other planet!..no-it is Earth

It had to have been absolutely terrifying. Death lurking above, below, every cave, every crease.
