Hello guys, I recently was provided a copy of my Dad's Company CIB list of recipients. Even though all the men received the CIB award on that day, was a record kept of when each man actually earned it in battle? Thanks! James
The CIB isn't that kind of an award. It is awarded for being in battle for 45 days, it's more along the lines of a good conduct medal or jump wings.
What got me thinking was that his CIB list was dated May 1, 1945 but his award doc shows April 25, 1945. Was that just a typo by the gov?
You have me confused (though it's easy to do). If your father was awarded the CIB, the BS was retroactively awarded later because winning the CIB meant he was "in close combat with the enemy". I believe this award was announced in 1946.
Me too That's correct, but it was the date on the BSM doc that I was curious about. If the BSM was based on the CIB award in this case, why would the BSM award show a different date for his "meritorious" service than the May 1st date on the CIB list? Thanks!!
I'm not sure if there was any correlation. The date on my father's BS was 1985. That was the date of award, even though he was awarded the CIB during the war.
Interesting for sure. If it had been a more recent date, I wouldn't have thought about it, but one week prior to the CIB makes me scratch my head? It's not important though, I'm just over analyzing Thanks!
Hey Guys, Sorry, bare with me, but I wasn't thinking of the possibility of a BSM apart from the retroactive post war CIB related award. This BSM doc came as a result of ordering my Dad's replacement medals, I also noticed they issued a "Correction to DD Form 214" document to add the BSM to his Discharge/separation from 1945. Any thoughts? Thanks again!
I recently applied for my grandfathers' medals (he earned a CIB). I received a new certificate for the retroactive BSM (dated 2015) with notice of the amendment to his records reflecting the BSM medal. Also, the date given on my grandfather's BSM certificate is not the same date that he was actually awarded his CIB (the date given was for D-Day at Anzio, but the CIB was awarded in March or May of that year, still during the Anzio campaign). I think it's pretty much certain that your dad's BSM is indeed the retroactively-awarded BSM for the CIB.

One other general question about the CIB, was it basically awarded to all the soldiers assigned to a particular Infantry platoon or Company rather than on a case by case basis with an individual? If it was awarded on a case by case basis, was there an individual entry made by the Commander? Thanks, this should do it ;D
I'm sure there were plenty of them awarded on an individual basis, but I believe the vast majority of them were unit-level citations. For example, my grandfather received his as part of a regiment-wide citation signed by the regiment's commander.
Seems to be the same case with my Dad, the CIB list was for all those in his Company that got it, also signed by their Commander. Thanks again!
Sorry to thread jack, but how is it possible to find out the date a CIB was issued? Would love to know when my grandfather's was issued
