Hello My name is Darren ive just recently started to try and find out info on my grandad and his role in WW2, I never met my grandad so never had the chance to listen to his war stories first hand, unlike my other grandad. Darren.
Welcome. Tell us where and with who your relatives served. I am sure that will be a main focus area for you, especially as you learn more. NOTE: At the top right there is a green button to do simple searches of the forum. Completely hidden from view, immediately beside it is the Advanced Database Search button. (The Admin has been contacted to fix this.) It is a box, exactly the same size. Click on it and then you can do much tighter searches into topic areas that interest you. That's the way to get topic titles exactly on task for you. You'll find heaps of good threads that way.
Hi guys Thanks fro the welcome. The one thing I'm trying to find out is where and with what regiment my Grandad served, Ive been told from my mum that in a letter he wrote to his brother that he served with the 7th Queens Own Hussars in North Africa, Egypt and Burma. The thing is I've got a photo of him in his uniform and his cap badge looks like the 22nd Dragoons, who fought in Easten Europe. He might of transferred at some point but how would i find this out? ill post the photo. Thanks Darren
Hello Darren and welcome to the forum The best place to start is to apply for his service records, they take a while to arrive but they will tell you where your Grandad was and which unit(s) he served with. https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records Perhaps you would like to register and start a new thread on our sister site at ww2talk.com, this site has a more British and Commonwealth focus and members there can help you too. Lesley
Welcome to the Forum, Darren. I can't offer you any better advice than what Lesley has given you. By the way. that's a great picture of your Grandad.
Hi Darren - He is indeed wearing a 22 Dragoons cap badge. Looking at his medal ribbons that photo was most probably taken after the end of WW2, so he may have transferred to them post war. As Lesley has already mentioned, get a copy of his service records from the MoD. They will tell you what units he was with and when he was with them. Off the top of my head I already have some of those unit war diaries so I'm sure we can come to some arrangement regarding the ones I don't have once you have a copy of his service records. Cheers Andy
