Top Scoring RAF Squadrons on the Battle of Britain

Does anyone have any information on which squadrons in the RAF had the highest kill claims during the Battle of Britain?

I can find records on individual pilots easily enough, but pulling up info about the squadrons themselves seems to be a bit more difficult.

My 1st guess would be Polish 303 Squadron during the Battle of Britain with 126 German aircraft or "Adolfs" claimed

I'm pretty familiar with 303 Squadron and I was expecting someone to mention it considering their exploits. But I was looking for something on some of other squadrons. Those links don't really list how many kills the claimed except in a few cases like 609 squadron or 603 squadron on their wiki pages.

303 Polish squadron did indeed make very high claims in September 1940 however recent research indicates they were enthusiastic rather than accurate. The Polish pilots tended to engage the enemy from very close ranger and therefore often quite a few pilots were credited with kills when in fact they were all shooting at the same aircraft. Post war archaeology tends towards 603 Squadron being the most accurate. 74 squadron seems one of least accurate with many claims unconfirmed by LW records. 92 Squadron seemed to be a victim of it's own hype.

 

I registered on this forum only for one purpose - to answer Keith A. You do not have to believe Polish pilots who claimed to have shot down so many planes. But what do you say to the Northolt commander, Stanley Vincent? Did the No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron score the most kills in the Battle of Britain?

I strongly advise you to read this book BEFORE you start talking about your nonsense again ... It's easy to forget about OWN history ... We remember. You, obviously, not.

Now that - hopefully - some of the heat has gone out of this thread, I'd like to make a recommendation for anyone looking for the type of information requested.

To my knowledge, there is only one book which can give this type of detail ; -

'RAF Fighter Squadrons in The Battle Of Britain' by Anthony Robinson ( Caxton editions reprint, 2000 ; ISBN-13-978-1860199073 ).

It contains masses of information, squadron-by-squadron and is essential to any BofB library IMO. It was originally published in the 1980s with the latest reprint shown above ; OOP but it's really not hard ( or expensive ) to find.

 

Is his information correlated with German records?

 

As far as I'm aware, only with that which had been published at the time ie he didn't personally delve into German archives, but he did use the PRO.
