Can you tell me what happened to these boys please?

I am writing from the UK about the 83rd Ordnance Battalion stationed in South Molton, Devonshire in 1944.

I was born in South Molton in 1941 and lived at 18 Barnstaple Street, South Molton with my parents and brother. Opposite our house there was a pub called The Barnstaple Inn. In 1944 that pub, and some other establishments in the town, were used by the American army.

Several of the soldiers at the Barnstaple Inn used to visit us. My dad had a wireless shop and we lived at the back of it. There were 2 soldiers, both named Ross and another called Snowie who visited us regularly and there were others. The two Rosses were black Americans. My brother kept in contact with one and later with his family. I believe that Ross may have been killed. Although I was very young I can remember Ross coming to our house. I pestered my parents for a doll when I was young but did not get one until after the war. I named him Ross.

I have often wondered what happened to these boys. I was told that many of them were killed in France. I know the information I have given is vague but is it possible to find out the names of boys billeted at The Barnstaple Inn with christian names Ross? Could you tell me what happened to the 83rd Ordnance Battalion after they left South Molton please?

I live in Scotland now but visit South Molton frequently. I could send you photos of the town if you would like me to.

Thank you very much for your reply. I am attaching a photo of the Barnstaple Inn. There was a large area at the back of the pub and a skittle alley. The soldiers were billeted there. The road sign post showing A361 is by the entrance to the back of the pub.

I will gather together some other photos of South Molton which may be of interest to you. Some local girls had relationships with the soldiers. I will see what I can find out.

Fred, can you tell me what happened to these boys please? Where did they go after they left South Molton. I know that the Americans were at Omaha Beach and Utah Beach in Normandy. Is that where the 83rd Ordnance Battalion were?

In 2003 I contacted Phil X who told me that there were black Americans in 3419 Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Company. I googled this and found

29 August 1913 – 26 August 1962

I think I told you that one of the black Americans who visited my home was called Ross which I took to be his Christian Name. Well, I know its a long shot but maybe his surname was Russ and I heard it as Ross.

Benjamin was with the 3419 Ordnance AMC.

There were a lot of names to repair and/or to explain. And also to get everything on the right location (there will be still many mistakes made by Google maps, because of the UK counties had different names).
I still hope that anyone will find something of the 83rd Ordnance Battalion.
