Charles Whiting is the author and it ranks 4 out of 5 stars. Just ordered it, hard to beat free and will post as review. Will last only thru today. Book version is $17 to$ 31 .

 

A couple of related questions to ponder as you read. Exactly what sources has Leo kessler/Charles Whiting used for his book? How do you know where his stories have come from and whether they are true?

 

Funny, I was thinking those very same things. My plan was to read it and the footnotes to see if it is legitimate, an old habit for reading papers and books when I was a teacher. At $0.00 I figured it was wiorth a try, probably the same price in pound sterling, quid and pence ! .

In my case and to many others the lost of time is also a cost if the book is worthless. I still work long hours, not as fast as I once was, and time to read is too rare. If the book were expensive I would ask for advice here first but since it is free the delete button will take care of it, near instantly.

I would not touch another Charles Whiting book with a ten foot pole, even not if you paid me real good money for it!

 

Thanks for the insight. there is an old adage, "Nothing is free" and I was suspicious of why this book was ! Now I want to know just how bad it is !

When I noticed the thread title, I was immidiately thinking of my post to another thread in WW2talk on November 24, 2015. I am not sure it fits in this thread, but have a look.

I have read Charles Whiting's books. He tells a story well. Charles Whiting was a veteran of the NW Europe campaign serving in the 53rd Welsh Division.

The question is whether he is telling a tall tale or writing history! His book on the Ardennes claimed that Patton was having an affair with his niece and that the Germans had infiltrated artillery observers into the town of Clerf/Clerveux before the attack. Neither claim is sourced nor stands up to scrutiny.

The time waste factor is speculating whether to believe what you have read. On the other hand you might enjoy hearing a good dit.

 

I enjoy Whiting's style....but just like today's media, inet news, pics, etc, the writers leave out important information, or just pick information to write about to try to get their own view across, or sell books, instead of the truth?? .....I'm reading Wolf's Lair and the book makes it it seem like hitler can do no wrong
many books about modern events try to put their own spin on it.....I don't see how anyone can tell about certain 'truths' in a WW2 book, such as an affair here, and affair there.....

 

.. well that's 'history' isn't it. 'Facts' are all very well, but its how you order them, rearrange them, leave them out....
