Do you think veterans get enough support from the government? I ask this because the veterans I know seem to be scraping by. I hate to see this because they have done so much for our country and it seems like they are given a pat on the back and are forgotten before long.

I don't know a lot of veterans so I may be missing something.

No i don't think they get enough Sam, even todays Veterans are seeking more help as they also feel like the forgotten Soldier.

Forgotten is the word of choice here. You just have to compare them with the US Vets and you see straight away they are being forgotten. It's that old Victorian attitude toward everything. The Officers & the Men. And it won't change. In my humble opinion, of course.

I voted no. I have seen many careers ruined, and many broken families for a measly handshake and a pat on the back. Excuse me but there is a reason I no longer serve...

The same reason I have asked my Son not to serve. I have been told that it is wrong of me to put this in his head but honestly I see to many vets struggle and I don't want him fighting for a country that seems to care very little for all the soldiers do.

As I am not from England I don't know the situation in your country. I read last week an article in the newspaper about roses which people wear. You can get that rose by donating to an organistion who helps veterans. That is all that I know about it.

I told my son the same. He's only twelve now, but I am ensuring he has other career options. i won't be dissapointed if he joins, but if he does he will be in the officer ranks and with a well thought out plan.

Oh see I dont know how to plan your military career I figure you just enlisted and went on. My son is only 7 and it is ultimately his decision but I just wish that vets were taken care of a lot better than they are.

No, I don't believe they are taken care of the way they should be. We are going through dealing with trying to get my father in law treatment for skin cancer and what a run around it has been. I just feel that they have done so much that they should not have to worry about something as basic as medical care. But I am not surprised considering the state of our healthcare industry here.

No. Thats my vote. I don`t know about England, but here in the grand ole U Sof A , the treatment of our Veterans is SHAMEFULL. In my own family we have many horror stories. The lack of health care, and jobs is horrible enough. Then you have the really horrible Veterans hospitals. When you get sick or have a disease, the treatment you get at theses facilities is just unbelivable. They are filthy institutions with total lack of compassion. I am so dis-heartned by these situations. One out of every 4 homeless people in America today is a Veteran. This is not acceptable. :realmad: This needs to change people! We need to make this a focus of the next election. Make our VETERANS a priority! And NOW.

I was reading a statistic the other day that about 1/3 of our nation's homeless are veterans. That right there should tell you something. People who sacrificed so much of their lives for our country ought to be taken care of so much better. BTW-- on the poll I clicked the wrong button by accident!! The answer I meant to vote was no.

I do believe that veterans are treated better now than they have been. My grandpa lived in a veterans home, and it was very, very nice. I hear that not very long ago they were all pits.

I voted no :lame: because there are so many men and women who have put their lives on the line and then come home and have nothing to show for it. I think that as a country if we valued our freedom as much as we say we do then we would take better care of the people who stand in harms way to defend out great country and our freedom.

Making the Vets a priority should be done now, in a few years time we will have no vets from WWII at all. Vets of today have a better chance to recieve what they rightly deserve if only the people who are stopping this listen to Joe Public.

There is pretty much always a serious problem with the support for our vets. I voted no on the poll as well. Vets, in my opinion, should deserve excellent treatment as they risk their lives for the rest of our's.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately. You know those of us that do not know what it is like to be in the battle area just don't have an appreciation for what these men and women go through. They protect us and prevent us from having to live through war on our turf. We have freedom not because the government says so its because these men and women made it possible.

i guess what also bothers me the most is not only are they not getting enough but what they were promised, get's taken away? When you sign up for the military, you sign a contract, that contract should not be able to change for what you signed up for. Health benefits for example, painfully getting a lot less? :(
don't get me wrong i still love and respect our military.

To be honest I think it is just going to get worse as these men come back from Iraq. There are some already that are trying to get help and having trouble. I just watched a special on this exact same thing the other night on CNN.

My uncle was always complaining about his pension. I mean these people put their lives on the line. I think the big oil companies should pitch in to increase their pay. If they can afford to charge us over 3 bucks a gallon they can afford to pay our veterans.

I do feel that are vets are not given enough, based on stories and experiences from other people. However, my father is a vet. Not of WWII but of Vietnam. In his case, I don't feel like he's not taken care of. He is self sufficient and has never needed any extra care, benefits, etc. So as far as his case I think they are given enough. But he could be the exception. He has never had any side effects from being at war other than recurring nightmares that he has when he hasn't gotten a lot of sleep in awhile, but those are hardly anything.

So I guess I see the point from varying people on why they do not get enough, I just feel my father is one that does not fit into this category.
