In April 1943, Gérard Doré joined up. He was 15 years 9 months old.

He dreamt perhaps of heroic fights that fashion heroes. He landed at Courseulles-sur-mer on 8th July 1944 and took part in operations south of Caen. He was cut down by enemy machine-gun fire. He was sixteen. Three comrades older than he are buried at his side, their dreams unfinished, and their youth intact. 147 others were less than twenty. Gerard Dore lies in the cemetery at Cintheaux. With 2,959 graves it is the biggest Canadian War Cemetery of the Second World War.
