An aging Battle of Britain pilot had been invited to the junior school near his home to present a short talk to the pupils about his experiences during the war. Recounting how during one sortie “The whole sky was full of Fokkers”. This raised a few titters and laughs from the assembled pupils so the headteacher felt she had to interrupt the talk explaining that a Fokker was the name of a German aircraft manufacturer, to which the old pilot replied “That’s absolutely correct, but these fokkers were Messerschmitts!”
