Finnish Airforce identification manual for the Russian aircraft in spring 1942 Nice pics! http://www.virtualpilots.fi/hist/WW2History-Tunnistus.html
OK, that's a very cool site! Love how they reproduce all the pages, and the images are pretty good size, giving a good view. (Heh- is there a similar site for the Panzerknacker anti-tank manual, I wonder? ) I did notice something tho- one of the pages identifies the Spitfire- did the Russians actually get and use any Spitfires?
yes for high altitiude recon work. Ace Walter Schuck has a lengthy story about trying to shoot these down in his memeories to be published, finally being successful in his 109G-6 while in JG 5
Excellent, Kai. Thank you! Rest of us: watch out for the parts in English too Look at this: http://www.virtualpilots.fi/hist/WW2History-HC-English.html
The Red Air Force received over 1,300 Spitfires, mainly Mk.V and Mk.IX models. The Soviets were not too impressed however, as they generally received the used machines as the RAF were phasing them out. Patched-up old Mk.Vs didn't measure up too well against Fw-190s and the latest Bf-109s by the time they reached the Red Air Force. Saw plenty of action, mostly in the south of the Soviet Union if I remeber correctly - the Ukraine and the Black Sea region.
