I have been playing "Axis&Allies" a lot lately. I think it is a nice game, but in the course of time there are some flaws which irritate me: 1. The manpower of the competitors are 'limitless'. You draft men as you can, while in reality some countries had to cope with manpower shortages. 2. You always can see the position of the enemy units. In reality you have to deal with limited intelligence information about unit strengths etc. 3. The territories are too big and disproportionate in size. The importance of Karelia is vital, while Crete is not even on the map. Do you have other suggestions? Or agree with me or not?
If you're referring to the original, then the main flaw (if you can call it that - at least gameplay-wise) is that the US can't loose unless they actively try to do so.
Check out stores that specialize in gaming. There were a lot of aftermarket products available at one time.Huge and more detailed maps, different rule books concerning war at sea and a lot of detailed gaming pieces specific to the country of choice.
Also, unless I am mistaken, the US player didn't start the game at the same time as the other nations.Write your own rules to make the game more historicaly correct.
I did manage as the German to invade canada once. My oponent had just set up a factory in East Canada and was a bit disgusted when I bounced across the Atlantic before he got it into opperation.
Yes it does, the game starts in mid-1942 with the Axis at the height of their powers. Many of the flaws of the original game have been adressed in the 2004 version which I prefer very much. Even so, you simply can't turn WW2 into a board game and keep it entirely accurate. Axis & Allies is a very good try, I would say.
I have once played the boardgame A&A-version beginning in 1939, which was not enhancing the ease to play it. The setting up alone cost us the whole afternoon... I think A&A should be brought as a computer game, because it is difficult to find four players. Secondly the handling can be done much easier with a mouse click than on a boardgame.
Which Axis&Allies are you played? Original (Boardgame) Boardgame on comp Or the new 1 based on the board game, but is played more like command and conqour?
Boardgame on comp Another vital element of warfare is also forgotten by the makers of the game: resources. Without oil a modern army can't fight.
I think you're over-estimating the realistic capabilties of the game's designer's to represent the complexities of warfare. It is a board game that represents a few years of warfare in, at the most, a few hours. The resources to keep an Army (Infantry, Armored, Air Force or Navy equivalent) are abstracted into the cost of the relevant unit's IPC cost. If you want a more detailed game, look elsewhere, but expect it to take you more than a few hours to play.
