    1
    11
    21
    1211
    111221
    312211
    13112221
    1113213211
    __________

    What's the last line?

Took my teacher 45 minutes to get it the first time he saw it.

I think. They form vertical series, 1-1-2-1-1-3-1-1-4 and such. I'm not sure about the last few though.

It's a pattern, as the people above me said.
It really only took me a few seconds to figure out, I might have seen it before though.

Uhh, yes, that 4 is correct. I got it wrong. I think CSP has the answer here.

I don't remember the correct answer (must ask the teacher tomorrow) but I remember that the first digit was 3, not 4.

    (Ack.....too much math)

    All hail Google! :p
Solution: It's actually quite simple :) After starting the sequence with 1, each term in the sequence consists of groups of two numbers based on the previous term - the first being the quantity and the second specifying which digit.

Example: the first term is 1, which has "one 1" in it, therefore 11.
11 has "two 1's" in it, therefore 21.
21 has "one 2 and one 1" in it and therefore 1211.

    Googling isn't fair!

Anyway, in that case, the answer is:

    1
    11
    21
    1211
    111221
    312211
    13112221
    1113213211
    31131211131221

Both the solutions are correct - as long as the solution applies to all the information given, then the solution must be considered correct.

Stix explained it pretty well I think.

    1
    11
    21
    1211
    111221
    312211
    13112221
    1113213211

Every line lists what numbers were on the previous one. The first line is just "1" to start it off; the next one reports that the previous line consists of one 1, or "1 1". The third line reports that the one before it had two 1s, or "2 1". It goes on like that. In order to find the next line, all you have to do is check what numbers are on the line before it. In this case, the last line has:

    Three 1s
    One 3
    One 2
    One 1
    One 3
    One 2
    Two 1s

And so the next line will be:

    31 13 12 11 13 12 21

    1
    11
    21
    1211
    111221
    312211
    13112221
    1113213211
    31131211131221

If we go one line further, the answer is:

    13 21 13 11 12 31 13 11 22 11

    1
    11
    21
    1211
    111221
    312211
    13112221
    1113213211
    31131211131221
    13211311123113112211
