Ok, I want to know what everyone's favorite bomber of WWII is. I'm trying to see which bomber is basically the most popular. Period; 1 September, 1939 to 13 August, 1945. Any country. My personal Favorite Is: The Ju87B
A-26 Invader. The Douglas A-26 was fast (373 mph), carried a respectable bomb load (6,000 lbs; 4,000 lbs internal; 2,000 external), good range (1400 miles) and up to 18 forward firing .50's (eight in the nose, six in wing packs and two in the upper turret). Compares very favorably with two other of my favorites, Mosquito FB VI and Doulas A-20. For fighter aircraft, I have to go with the Corsair, P-51 and Spitfire. I wish I knew more about Soviet aircraft, they are definitely under represetned.
How about some info as to why you're picking your choices? For instance (And I'm not picking on you for any reason other than yours was the last posted), why the "E" over the almost identical "F" Revere? For me I'd say there is almost too many to choose between and my choice changes from time to time, but most often I'd go for the humble Wimpy. The Wellington was tough, pretty well armed for its time (For what good it did it), carried the night bombing offensive for a good half of the war and continued in usefull service after that. Added to that it was a book with a Wimpy in that got me into WWII aviation to begin with.
I have always found obscure or/and wierd looking aircraft more interesting than the more "mainstream" B-17s or Lancs, so I would probably go for something like the Handley Page Hampden. But I like the B-24, which is "mainstream" but ugly, and the Mitsubishi G3M which is not too obscure and actually quite good looking as well.
Lancaster.Seems weird, but I like the night and thats when it did most of its missions, lol Im serious. It could also cause some severe damage to the enemy with its potential armament.
i would have to pick the Petlyakov Pe-2. it was fast twin engine light bomber. at the start of Germany's offensive in 1941 the Me109 could easily shoot down most other soviet aircraft except the Pe-2. they found it hard to catch and distroy. also when the the british sent sent a detachment of Hawker Hurricane IIBs to Vianga, near Murmask to cover the Pe-2s in a bombing raid they found it very difficult to keep up.
Opps, edited instead of quoted: The Douglas A-26 was fast (373 mph), carried a respectable bomb load (6,000 lbs; 4,000 lbs internal; 2,000 external), good range (1400 miles) and up to 18 forward firing .50's (eight in the nose, six in wing packs and two in the upper turret). I wish I knew more about Soviet aircraft, they are definitely under represented.
I like the Mitchell because it was so versatile. Both the USAAF and the Navy used it (not sure about the Marines) and it was reliable and easily flown. The strafer models are my favorite, given their antishipping role.
Allies: A-26 Invader (Later B-26 with the K model being the most "evil") Axis: JU88 (did about everything)
WWII it was the A-26, the B-26 was the Marauder until it was phased out postwar and the Invader was redesignated.
France: Bre-693 Germany: He-111 Italy: SM-79 Sparviero Japan: P1Y Ginga Poland: PZL-37 Los SSSR: Yer-2 (interesting airplane) UK: Hampden (you just got to love the flying suitcase) USA: A-20 (especcialy soviet A-20G torpedo bombers)
I like the Lockheed Hudson I've always considered it to be one of the most underrated bombers of WW2. The first US built aircraft in RAF service to shoot down an enemy aircraft, the first Allied aircraft to sink a U-boat with rockets, the first aircraft to drop an air-borne lifeboat in operational service. the first USAAF aircraft to sink a U-boat, the first USN aircraft to sink a U-boat, etc etc.
