You have a small island republic which you must build up its military from threat of invasion.

You can however only use WW2 era AFVs.

What do you pick...logistics, machinery and all that are not an issue.

I dont think that is AFV :D

For small island republic i dont think u need much AFV. More u need AA and anti ship weapons.

First the choice of a my tank depends on the choice of the island, so I would take this one.

    My island by night^^

As Sinissa mentioned an island (like this one) is not very eligible for the maneuver warfare, unless you mean an small island like Britain :p ;)
For such an island i would just pick a couple of tanks. I would build up two groups for the two main inslands.

    One group contents:
    4x Jagdpanzer IV/48 or Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer
    2x Sturmhaubitze 42
many mules for a fast ammo supply ^^
maybe some Sd.Kfz 234/2 Pumas for Reconnaissance

Flak? MK 12 quadruple mounts, Oerlikon 20 mm cannon and Mk32 Mod4

..then a submarine pen in the south, some camouflaged shelters for S-Boats/PT-Boats on the two main islands and as aircover Ju-88Gs and P-47s.

    INVINCIBLE !!! :)

    .

Island defense is about artillery so I would go for some hidden big boys , SU-152, Hummel and M4 priests , with some M4 calliope multi-barrels rocket launcher for saturation bombing
some AA whirlwind for air cover working with M4 crocodile flame throwers , to make paratroopers shish-kebbab and close cleaning of the beaches ,
plus some tigers moving in pre dug pits overlooking the likely sites . that should give the uninvited guest some headache .
