Poor lion. Too bad it didn't take at least of those half assed hunters with him. As we say: " God protects idiots and drunkards" Unfortunatly.

I wouldn't be going shooting lions in the first place. BTW lion acted in self defence (he was shot at first) and as such had any right to chew on incompetent hunters in self defence. :D

    That explains a lot :D :D :D :D :D :D

The location isn't stated, so they may or may not be breaking the law. Regardless, the hunters are obviously incompetent. Expecting to kill a large mammel with one shot while it is moving is rediculous. Since they have scopes on their rifles, they could easily have made sure they had killed is from afar, giving it the coup de grace.

large game parks in africa must be heavily patrolled to protect the animals within from poachers , who if unchallanged would shoot every large and small animal they could find . thanks to the generosity of the soviets , ak47s are as common as stones in all of africa .

it is often the patronage of wealthy tourist hunters from all over the world who pay astounding fees to shoot certain large game animals , this money keeps such places open .the park selects an old or weak animal . the hunter gets his mantel peice . and everyone wins .the local population ,the wild african animals and especially all of us , most of which will never see wild lions hunting zeebras or giant crocs in the zambezi river . at least we know that , that world is still there .

you can be assured that the lion we see being shot in this video was hand selected for culling by park managers weeks or months before the hunt we see here .the cat is old ,ill or well past his prime . if some rich guy doent shoot him , he will die as allmost ALL old lions die in nature , by being torn to peices and devoured ( while still alive ) by hyenas . one old lion is shot to support the cost of maintaining a huge reserve so that the lions and everthing else can continue to live there .

the other option is to surrender the land to a robert mugabe and he will convert it into a permanently game free desert populated by huge overgrazeing herds of starving goats trailed by hapless starving africans .ie evil rhoadesia of the sixties to the paradise of zimbabwe today . lush farmlands of plenty and breathtakeing game parks converted into starving somali type barrens ,and in only a few decades .

but at least there are no evil rich white hunters or safaries or lions or any OTHER wild animals of any kind .it is not easy to fund and maintain a huge game park in the face of black africas burgeoning population .

remember ,nature is not as seen on disney , even for the king of beasts ,there is no such thing as dieing of old age ,large wild boars and bears did not get to die in their sleep back when wolves still roamed the forrests of europe . there are no rest homes for elderly lions .tigers and bears .

nature is not kind to old creatures , read up on how our own hunter gatherer ancestors treated their elderly in their "golden weeks "when the band arrived at a tough river crossing or steep snowy mountain pass . left behind alone or in a very small group , to starve or more often be rendered by the then ,very common , eurasian wolf .

people who have never hunted before often think hunting is just shooting animals ,which it is not .most hunting involves lots of rough back country hikeing and endless days of patience and often fruitless search . hunting dangerous big game animals involves all of the above ,plus sometimes actual personal danger , as we can see from the clip .

unless i win the lotto , i will never get to go on an african big game safari but from the saftey of my computer screen i can assure you if lion hunting , i would never use anything so unfair as a bolt action rifle ,no sir ..i would use a fire hardened stick , a large sheath knife or perhaps a pocket full of lemon sized stones .after all we want it to be a fair contest between man and beast .for smaller cats such as leapords i would just use my bare hands and mabey some dental floss...guns are for pussys and girlymans !

Well, they could have shotted the lion already in the first part of the movie but they let him go. Very stupid, they had a decent shot at close range. I know hunters who shoot small animals like running rabits at twice that range with a normal shutgun, and those are just amateur hunters.
Also, hard to notice, the guy on the left at the start of the movie uses a bipod to stable his rifle. This points out that he is having either parkison or to lazy to do an effert to stabalize the gun with just his hands (once again, i know amateur hunters who don't use bipods and still shoot deers).

If i was that lion, i would also attack, i mean, i present myself in a clear way and they still don't fire. Do they think i have all day doing nothing? :D

A hunters' first and foremost primary goal is a clean-kill.
It appeared to me that the lion was well within range, and no excuse for not dropping him cleanly.

As a hunter, even I found myself cringing at that one. Not because I'm suffering from the "Bambi Syndrome" as I do understand the relationship between predator and prey. I DID find myself wishing that the lion had knocked the head off that dumb-sumbitch he charged.

I don't pretend to know the circumstances of the hunt, so will not comment... except to say I have no interest in hunting big, dangerous game. I would much rather admire them from a distance. In the case of a man-eater however, the gloves would come-off.

I'll stick to waterfowl and the small-game I grew-up hunting. We're thick with Whitetail-deer here, but I have no desire to shoot one. The only deer I ever killed was with my white Chevy truck.

Use of 'sticks' or a bipod to steady your shot is, to me, the mark of a more conscientious hunter... ie. one that knows what he is doing. Shame he didn't relax and better place his shot. Perhaps he didn't check the 'zero' on his rifle/scope before the hunt.

No excuse not to kill cleanly at the range indicated. If I was the lion, I'd have been a bit pissed 'meself. Grrr.

Obviously, the best possible solution would be to kill it as quickly as possible, but if something does go wrong, they should act accordingly.

gentlemen , please watch again , THIS IS A DISPLAY OF COOLNESS UNDER FIRE , which to my knowlege , has never been matched in live film .

the clients first shot dropped the cat but it was not a clean shot .the lion sprang up and charged , right before he struck the client , the guide shot him through the face and broke his jaw as you can plainly see as the cat flys , stunned and agape , through the air past the resolute client .
as the twice , thrice? wounded lion attemts to flee after the leap , the guide again shoots and kills him .]

like most of you , i feel a sense of melancholy at the death of the great creature but as ive pointed out the , lions death often pays the way to keep such places wild in the last truely wild place on the good earth .

both the client and guide acted with great courage and skill , the client , by standing firm and continueing to fire and work his bolt , in the face of onrushing death and the guide with his awesome head shot delivered from mabey ten feet at a huge lion bearing down apon both of them in a full speed charge .

i cant imagine anyone viewing this awesome video without respect and deep admiration for all parties shown , i could only hope that were i that hunter i would have displayed the resolve and steadfastness he did , as to the guides shooting , it will be veiwed by big game guides forever as EPIC ,dispaying rule number one for big game guides ;never let the quarry kill or eat a paying customer !

the great beast was struck by three bullets for certain , look again , there may be a fourth just prior to the shot that shattered the big cats jaw .
imo ,had not the guide made the miracle head shot , the client would have likely been severely rendered whoresdecombat ....and , of course , the others would be hard pressed to safely shoot the lion once he was bodily apon the hunter .

...in fact , i defie anyone to display a clip or footage from anywhere ,anytime , of any hunter , soldier , gangster or cop whose shooting skill under actual mortal life and death pressure matches the skill of this unknown springbok ? safari guide !!

seen wearing short pants on the right side of the frame .this unkown guide is what rambo ,the duke ,chuck norris and crocodile dundee pretend to be in the movies , cool and collected in the face of sudden and very mortal danger . i would venture that 99.9 % of the worlds humanity would freeze and choke or panic and run in terror and soiled underpants . in the face of this horrific charge .

btw , can any of you internet sleuth types , tell me how to discover the guides name , how would one tackle that question ? im gonna bet he is a boer or an east africa brit...help , anyone ?

watch again , this is the greatest display of coolness under ever filmed . the cat is hit at least twice before he strikes the hunter . the client -hunter is resolute and steadfast till the end .the second strike fired at point blank by the guide shatters the big cats jaw and most likely , saves the clients neck .the cat is struck for certain at least three times in this clip and mabey four .

one thing is certain , the guide has ice water in his veins and is , in the flesh , what norris ,stalone ,eastwood and the govenor of kollyfornia aspire to be in the movies .

the hunter -client is also shown to be no sloutch either , his resolute stance while working his peice till the (would be) end , is something that wellington , jackson or nelson would surely have admired , could they see it .

the hunters shooting is admittedly less than perfect but , though i fancy myself a fairly decent shot with a rifle , ive never had to test my skills with 500 lbs of onrushing primevel bellowing fury .i can only hope that i would " stand fast and man up " as this hunter tourist most surely did .

can anyone advise me as to ferret out the names of these brave and lucky fellows ?

I agree woody... That guy was macho! If that had been me I would probably have pooped my pants and ran for it. Though I am of the opinion that showing fear and running from an angry animal is probably the worst possible thing to do, in situations like that I'm sure instinct would take over and my head would not have a say in the matter :D

Oh well, judging by the comments that video recieved, I guess its a good thing that I am only one of a minority who would not have wrestled the lion to death with my bare hands... I'm suprised just how many pro-lion hunters are out there on the internet... "zomg, you couldn't kill it when it was running towards you! it took u 10 shots wtf?" Dont be decieved by the profile pictures, they may look like teenage emo kids, and they may have the grammar of a 10 year old, but these people are cold-blooded killers who put live sharks in their breakfast cereal just for the hell of it...

I think that if they were amateurs everyone along the line would've opened fire.

Let me just say that I honor the lion deeply.
Because the risk of an offensive aggressive rant is rather high I will not comment on the hunters.

The last time I looked a lion tag in South Africa was $25,000 US.

Anyway, African animals are tough! I shot my blue wildebeest 5 times with a .338 Winchester Magnum before it decided to die. I always strive for a one stot clean kill but this one was different. Some animals are tougher than others and this lion is one of them but all game in Africa is tough. We don't know what caliber rifles they were using but most good professional hunters won't let you hunt dangerous with anything smaller than a .375 H&H.

I can't put my hands on the exact quote or who made it... but it went something like this:
"The first shot from a .416 Rigby will drop a Cape Buffalo dead in his tracks without fanfare. But if you don't kill him with that first shot, every other cartridge you fire will only serve to make him more determined to kill you."

    Or something to that effect.
Dang, I wish I could put my hands on that quote... I just have too many magazines laying around the house!
