I read the book "In Harms's Way" by Doug Stanton, couldn't put it down. In case you have never read it, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. The sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the extraordinary story of its survivors. One of the best sea stories I have ever read.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- A team of civilian researchers led by entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul G. Allen has announced they have found the wreck of the World War II cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35), which was lost July 30, 1945.

This is a significant discovery considering the depth of the water in which the ship was lost - more than 18,000 feet. Around 800 of the ship's 1,196 Sailors and Marines survived the sinking, but after four to five days in the water - suffering exposure, dehydration, drowning, and shark attacks - only 316 survived.

Same here. It surprised the hell out me this afternoon when I was browsing Reddit. I actually shouted "YES!" when I saw the photos. That shot of the spare parts box and the hull number was both mesmerizing yet haunting.

I expect that a video "tour" of the wreck will be coming soon (like Musashi), so I'm really looking forward to seeing what the rest of Indy looks like.

Don't be so sure... I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of props disappear tonight. And... oooh... that pristine anchor!!!

Did the captain of the Indianapolis ever get exonerated? I've read in the past that there were several attempts by his family, former crew members and such who tried to do so.

Good for him, and all who were pushing the exoneration efforts.

If you want to read more into it, try finding a copy of Left for Dead by Pete Nelson. Granted, its intended for teens and young adults, but its quite readable and does a good job of outlying the efforts of Indy's crew and Hunter Scott to clear Captain McVay's name.
