As with the recent passing of Lou Reed, one had to say 'he had quite a life' lived to the full. Even so, I was sad to read of his passing - naturally, most will immediately think of his mesemerizing performance as T E Lawrence. But somehow, I also 'liked' his portrayal of the near-demented German officer in 'Night Of The Generals'. Certainly - a legendary actor.
One of the greats, absolutely. Nobody will ever make another film like Lawrence of Arabia, and if they did, what actor could pull that off? I'm very fond of a small film he did called Murphy's War. An angry Irishman vs a Uboat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mxRvQrPOvk
Ha. I thought I was the only one who had ever seen that clanker! Here's one of my favorites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVe-R7pwn8I&list=TL4zriVi2IuUc
"Power Play" 1978 Not a world war two movie, but interesting. A group of high ranking soldiers in a fictional third world country decide to launch a coup d'état (the original title) and install a military regime. also stars David Hemmings and Donald Pleasance. It was one of those Canadian tax break quickies, but had some interesting things to say.
First time on any forum... Not savvy to your protocol, but I am watching Murphy's war and wondering if anyone can tell me if that scenario (plot) could at all have been possible? Doesn't seem so to me, but all I know of World War II submarines is from watching the old movies.
Welcome aboard Riker. Just jump in and respond to anything you find interesting. Think less of protocol and more of a group of people at a pub. I did see the film but it was over 15 years ago now, so somewhat foggy on details, but I imagine the plot a bit far fetched. There are a few ex-navy people here who could speak to specifics better than I.
'Murphy's War' seems very far-fetched, but a fun idea for a movie. To me, it has parallels with the earlier John Mills film, 'Brown On Resolution' which is based on a novel, set in WW1, by C S Forester.
Speaking of great, now deceased actors, have any of you seen "The Mckenzie Break" starring the late Brian Keith? It was loosely (very) based on a real event. Best line: "Willie, me boy, we're both in the shithouse now!"
