The Catalonians returned the Separatist parties again. And then it went quiet.

I think it would be quite interesting (as a spectator) to see things play out towards independence. Its against the Spanish Constitution to cede from the Country, and the current leader (Prime minister? President?) of Spain has said he would send in the troops if they tried to gain independence.

Interesting to watch much like watching a multi car crash on the other side of the freeway I fear.

Another province in Spain is probably watching this even more keenly as the Basques have been pushing for independence for decades now themselves and will ;likely pounce on any flexibility coming from Madrid and that fear might convince the Spanish government to take a zero tolerance approach. Such a stance might only lead to serious violence and make a bad economic situation even worse.

Nor can this be seen as particularly good news for any kind of united Europe. Britain has left the EU (more or less) and the Scots have toyed with their own 'Scots-xit' as it is. I'm sure there are other places in Europe who chafe under other central governments, Quebec had a referendum a number of years ago that was uncomfortably close. In a world without external threats a collection of tiny principalities might work, but between Russia and ISIS/Al Qaeda inspired terrorism its a dangerous risk and unwise in the current climate were American political leadership is lacking.

 

But when you mention that to a Scots nat, the standard reply is "but who would want to attack us?!" and then laugh as if you didn't get out much.

Well, I think there is some thought over that that its because of the EU that ISIS etc have had so much success in Europe lately. One porous border and you never know who has entered the EU until they do something. Thats the issue with lack of borders - if XXX country is not so great with its security, it leaves a lot to chance.

I am actually surprised the Basques (Basquets?) haven't been waving their banners and protesting themselves...or at least colluding with the Catalonians to coordinate protests at the same time in different areas of the country. One rising for independence is easier to deal with than two at the same time.

 

Hey boys , My surnames are Catalan, like those of my great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents, except one. THERE IS NO WAY we go a civil war for the Cat independence:

A) In fact the wast majority of the Catalonia's population is "Castilian origin" (the rest of Spain). Must say the "Charnegos" (That is, the Catalans of "Castilian" origin ) are the most feral nationalists, as usual.
B) The elites will no go por the independence , Spain and the EU is the 80% of the local market.
C) The nationalist leaders are probably the most corrupt ... of Spain. Must say the PSOE has the European corruption record in the EREs trial.
D) They try to make a deal with Putin. He offered 10.000 soldiers and so on. And well, here we are in 2024 without a civil war.
