Hiya, I have discovered that during the Blitz from the night of October 8-9th 1940 the Luftwaffe switched from assigning bomber crews specific targets in London called 'Zielgebiet' (eg Battersea Power Station, West India Docks) to target areas of several square miles called 'Zielraum(e)' when it realised the inherent inaccuracy of their high altitude night-time bombings (Hyde et al, 1987 p.24). I am now looking to find maps of all these target areas used by the Luftwaffe, but I can't seem to locate them. Does anyone know of a possible source for these? References: Hyde, A., Ramsey, W., & Wakefield, K. (1987b). The Blitz Then and Now: Volume 2. London: Britain Prints International Ltd.
Hmmm, I have been in correspondence with the Bundesarchiv where the Zielraum maps are apparently located in Freiburg since May. Even had a friend set up appointments to go out there twice to look at them, but both times when he arrived they screwed up and couldn't produce the maps. Does anyone know of a way to get these or has seen them somewhere? We are desperate and the Bundesarchiv is hopeless!
Sorry, I should have said that in the case of Freiburg a sign should be hung out to the effect that "non German speakers need not apply". The ways of BAMA are inscrutable to say the least. They used to reply to English language inquiries with a letter - in German of course - telling you that you needed to ask in German if you wanted to get a reply.
I recognise the link provided by Lou and have used it myself on quite a few occasions. In particular it shows the bomb that wiped out my late wife's house in the Stamford Hill area of North London. See the story here: BBC - WW2 People's War - The night our house was sliced in half Ron
Yes luckily I have a German 'friend of a friend' who lives 1.5 hours away, but I've strained this relationship due to Bundesarchiv's repeated failures I am afraid.
I stumbled across this Blitz map of Greater London online - its the tenth image (all in yellow) down on the page. WWII map doodles reveal what rank and file thought of Adolf Hitler's plans | Daily Mail Online This is exactly the map I was looking for. All good now, thank you all. Cheers
In case of interest, I have used this 'Zielraum' map to write this paper (first author). Thank you for everyone's responses. https://academic.oup.com/joeg/article/21/6/869/6213370
