There's another Victorian VC winner's grave at Culross in Fife, which is immaculately looked after by the local community. Pity the trust is short of funds though. "THE Victoria Cross Trust will restore the grave of a fallen war hero after it was damaged by a council lawnmower. The trust has raised £3,000 to restore the grave of Colour Sergeant Anthony Booth, a recipient of the respected Victoria Cross. Located at St Michael’s Church, Brierley Hill, it was believed that the grave was desecrated by vandals, causing widespread outrage. It later transpired that the grave was damaged by a Dudley Council maintenance team this August, and permission was granted by the Diocese of Worcester to repair it. However, this may be the trust’s last project for a while due to ‘lack of financial support’. Sergeant Booth’s headstone has detached from the base curb stones, with scratches and damage to the surface and lettering of the grave. Victoria Cross Trust chief executive Gary Stapleton hopes that work on the grave should be finished by Christmas. He said: "How it was damaged is irrelevant now, there is no way of knowing how it really happened. Mr Stapleton said: ”It is done and the main thing is we want to move forward now that funds are in place to do the work and the church has given approval." Sergeant Anthony Clarke Booth famously covered his regiment for three miles as they retreated from the advances of 5,000 Zulu warriors in 1879. Sgt Booth, of William Street, Brierley Hill, served with the 80th Regiment of Foot former name of the South Staffordshire Regiment."
